Stock N64 problems with audio and video

Post by Silent Shadow »

(I've been searching through the N64 forum, including the sticky, and the Tech forum among others but can't seem to find anything that has helped so far. Sorry if I have missed something.)

I'm trying to help a friend (who doesn't live nearby) fix two stock N64 systems. He recently picked some up to customize but is having video/audio issues. He hasn't changed anything from the original factory system yet.

One system displays the video just fine, but has no audio.

The other system plays the audio, but no video.

Both systems power up just fine.

He is somewhat familiar with the insides of video game systems and has done the following troubleshooting:

- Opened both systems up and looked for obvious serious damage
- Checked the pin connectors for damage/rust/etc
- Cleaned carts and tried several different ones
- Checked for excess solder or bent AV pins that might cause a short
- Cleaned AV cables
- Tried different AV cables
- Tried different TV sets
- Reset the jumper pack and tried a few other jumper packs/exp packs
- Turned the system on without a game in it
- Turned the system on and with the power still on removed both the game and jumper/expansion pack. Turned off, then put the game and jump pack back in and powered it up again

Both systems are NTSC model number NUS-001

Any help is really appreciated! :D
