Psone lcd led mod nessacary?
Hi. I'm new here. I just got ben hecks book, and obviously its a very good book. Now, I was reading it because im interested in making a nes portable, however, I'm wondering about the benefits of the described psone mod where you replace the leds with white ones. Is it nessacary or worth it?

Personally I prefer it because 1) saves battery juice by lowering current draw 2) I can chop off the top of the board to save space and 3) it's one more thing I can play with when wiring everything up
The brightness level isn't a problem if you get some nice bright LEDs, say around 10,000 mcd. Once you get the brightness set to a level you like, it's not really necessary to adjust it much ever again. I pretty much never adjust the brightness on my SNESp. So overall I'd say it's worth it if you care to spend the half hour it takes (if you're being careful and it's your first time doing it) and battery life is an issue. However there are plenty of people who don't do the mod, so that's fine too.
Edit: If you do decide to LED mod your screen, I highly recommend trying out this calculator to determine what resistor you need. For example, say you're wiring three LEDs in parallel, you'd need to put in "supply voltage" of 5 volts, "voltage drop" of about 3.5v, and "desired LED current" of around 20 mA. Those values would tell you that you'd need around 25 ohms.
