Ok I want to put more notice to our Jab project.

Well iam7805 (Brandon) and I have anounced this a loooooooooooong time ago. But there wasn't reallyany notice for it. (ok maybe we should've anounced it more) The idea is making a tribute computer to the homebuilt computers of the 80's. I stil wanna discuss some things with iam but I don't talk to him a lot anymore. So I was wondering should we use a 6502 processor (more retro) or pics (easyness)? Post your opinion on his project. Btw this is a personal project it may not get done and that's not the goal. If you want to help know what your talking about.

Whats the point of making an super slow PC ?

It's a tribute sort of thing. As well as a project for learning.
you see you may "understand" a computer a bit. But to truly understand it go back to the basics.

Whatever your still making a extremely slow pc, can it even run dos games ?

well actually there was that dos65 thingie. So sort of ya.
And it's not incredibly slow. It may be slow compared to computers of today.

Not if it doesn't run DOS. You see, to do that we'd have to use an 8088 processor or higher. I looked into the possibilities of doing that, and we're not going to because:

A) Above our current skill level
B) Not available at Digi-key

Jeroen, there's another reason why I haven't been on MSN besides my band (although we were under a strict time limit to record our album because our bassist moved today). The reason is "Project ManBearPig". I will explain soon. I'm super cereal!

well prob not. It's prob incompatible with ms-dos. But in theory it could run dos.

If we use a 6502 it could probably play Atari 2600 ROMS. (Maybe NES or C64? I don't really know right now)

If we make a "graphical update unit" out of an atari ppu we could prob make a compatible mode.

Guys, there's a large difference between building a PC and designing a PC. Any average joe can buy parts for a desktop and plug them into each other, but does he really understand how it works?

The point isn't to play games, at least not initially, rather it is to truly create and own something. Back in the day before massive PC manufacturers, smart people singlehandedly invented person computers from the ground up. They knew all there was to know about the final device as well as the back of their hand. It was a true homebrew computer.

Saying this is "just" a really slow PC is like saying the Blackbox, Hydra, or XGameStation were all "just" really slow game consoles. The point was to be able to know something intimately for a change.

Can anyone tell that I like this idea yet?

As for the processor question, are 6502's easy to come by? I'd go with the more easily had for most people. [/b]

it's kinda halted. And since theres the hydra witch is basicly the same thing were not sure what to do with it anymore.

I haven't checked, but Jeroen told me that 6502s can be found on Digikey. I know that there's tons of different Z80 chips on Digikey though, if we need a backup plan.
