browser doesn't work

I hate that I have to ask but I can't figure it out. On my HP laptop shortly after Firefox 2.0.0.3 was installed I haven't been able to browse the internet. I can still use bittorrent, IM clients, and WoW, but if I try to use Firefox or IE nothing. All I get with the latter two is a "cannot connect" or "no connection" message. I've tried uninstalling Firefox 2.0.0.3, reinstall it, change internet options in "Control Panel", and have gone over everything in the connections setup on Firefox.

I'm drawing a complete blanks, any help would be useful.

Disable the Windows Firewall.

Check the connection settings in IE, as that affects the entire system.

Also, the is a utility (System File Checker?) that comes with WinXP that will go through and check system files to see if they're intact, which should find any DLL troubles that could affect both browsers.

I checked that already.

The only other thing that might have effected the system is I was trying to uninstall some Norton A/V and system protection software, couldn't get it all so I have it set to not start at boot. Though as that was a software firewall I was using I don't think it could be blocking access to my browsers now. Cause bittorrent and WoW both work no problem.

Try reinstalling Norton; for some reason port 80 is being blocked. I believe World of Warcraft and BitTorrent use other ports.

I'm starting to feel really stupid for doing this, I logged out of the Norton Internet Security program, and now I'm well you know. I can't change any settings. So I think as far as getting port 80 unblocked I either have to find a way to uninstall Norton or get that password reset. Add further complexions, when I try to uninstall via the add/remove software tool I'm prompted to login first before uninstalling. So I think I dug myself I nice grave here.
