Some Windows Media Center and Comp questions

Hello, I have a few questions.
I have Windows XP Media Center Edition

1) Media Center freezes/locks up for about 5-10 seconds while using winamp (With a guitar solo full song), and while using MSN and desktop. Why does it do this?

2) My Processor says: Intel Core Duo T2250 @ 1.73GHZ (2 CPUs). Is that 1.73 x 2? (Resulting in: 3.46 GHZ), or is that 2 8.80ish GHZ CPU's?

3) For some reason, I have to click "Turn off Computer" Twice for my laptop to turn off, why is that? (Like Start, Turn off computer, Turn off. I have to do that twice. It wont even turn off if I do it once)

My laptop is BRAND new, I just got it last monday.

My specs are:

AptonBook XL Model: HEL80C
RAM: 1GB RAM
Video Card: NVidia Geforce Go 7600 256 MB
OS: Windows XP Professional 5.1, Build 2600. (It says Windows XP Professional, but its Media Center)
BIOS: Ver1.00PARTTBL
Manufacturer: COMPAL
Processor: Intel Core Duo T2250 @ 1.73GHZ (2 CPUs).

1) Your PC isnt as powerful as you think, 1.73 Ghz is kinda slow. Try overclocking your Graphics card if you're adventurous

2) Your PC only has a 1.73 Ghz CPU (WinXP screws up on HT, and Dual Core CPUs, like mine and yours)

3) No idea, maybe something got messed up. Try Tuneup 2007 or CCLeaner, they *might* help

Well 1.73 GHZ is just like 2 880MHZ Processors?

Im confused :p

Also my 1.4GHZ IBM think pad thats like 7 years old, doesnt even lock up like that.

My idea of "fast" is an Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme overclocked to 4 Ghz

Which includes a Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX overclocked to the highest settings

All Core 2 Duo's are quick and speedy. Like AMD processors of yore, the lower speeds of the Core 2 Duo do not translate to low performance. A 1.73GHz C2D has two 1.73GHz cores based originally on the Pentium M architecture.

Does your computer freeze as you described if MSN is closed out entirely- all processes related to MSN stopped? I have known MSN to cause rather severe freezing on some systems. If the freezing goes away with MSN closed, try downloading a newer version if one exists.

Neither. If you run a program that is not built to run on duel processors it will run like it was on a single 1.73 Ghz. But if you run a program built for it it will run faster. The advantage of 2 or more processors is that if you run 2 seperate programs they both get a dedicated CPU.

teraflop is correct in respect of clock speeds.

Try running an antivirus program like AntiVir (its free). And then run RegScrub XP (link)

Tera, My comp will freeze for about 5 to 10 seconds if Im using winamp to play music. It also happens RARELY when I'm RUNNING msn and talking to someone.

I found, since I'm using Windows Media Player, it hasnt been freezing as much. :S Its like my OS hates winamp.

I'll try those 2 things you suggested too.

It also freezes for about 5-10 seconds when I'm streaming video from youtube that has music (Havnt tried any without music), or any other site.

(Like today, I was on video site, and it froze for about 5-10 seconds when streaming the video)

Later on, I'll try a youtube video without music.

Heres my theory based off patterns of the freezing. The VERY first time I watch streaming video on a site, it freezes for that 5-10 seconds. So like every time I turn on my comp, go to youtube, and watch a video for the first time that day, it will freeze. (I said day, as I use my laptop all day, and it stays cold.)

So like, everytime I turn my computer on, and go to watch a video the FIRST time since that computer has been turned on, it freezes.

That is strange.

If this is mostly related to sound you could try altering the hardware sound acceleration.

Got to Start > Run, type dxdiag and click OK, select the sound tab. You'll see a slider labelled Hardware Sound Acceleration Level. You shouldn't hear a difference in sound quality at different levels of acceleration, so try to find one that works. If changing hardware acceleration works, you may have an old sound driver.

Maybe there's a newer version of your sound card drivers? Or maybe an older version? (Sounds weird, but my Radeon 9200 doesn't like the latest build of the Catalyst control center. Hey it could happen...)

NEw drivers didnt help. Hmm, when ever I start playing music, the computers loading light either flashes on and off quickly, or stays on until it stops lagging.

Loading Light = The LED that comes on, when the computer is accessing drive, or loading desktop upon startup.
