Nintendo controller question

I've found that the D-Pad and A&B buttons are directly interchangeable between the NES controller and the original GameBoy (but not the rubber pads or the Select & Start buttons) but does anyone know if this is true for later GameBoy models, or even SNES controllers, so replacement buttons for those could be used in the NES controllers? (I think maybe the buttons on later GameBoy models are smaller?)
