The refresh rate is different, so you would have to build a scan converter to make them compatable.

There are a few ways to get video from your PC to your TV:
1. Buy a video card with integrated analog video outputs. (Composite, the yellow plug, and S-video, which looks like an ADB or PS/2 keyboard connector, are the most common. If you can, go with S-video, which gives a better picture than composite.)
2. Buy a cable that connects yoru VGA port to the TV. It will probably be the same as the schematics in the link above. Unfortunately I may be making this up since I haven't seen any.
3. Buy a box that converts VGA to component. Here's one on NewEgg for about 40 dollars. It does S-video and composite.

Again, you would need a scan converter to change the composite sync into the higher frequency horizontal and vertical sync of VGA.
It would be easier to track down an RGB component monitor, perhaps one for a Commodore...

Similar to this... (and possibly helpful???)
Was going to start a new topic, but this is pretty similar, so I'll ask here:
What I'm going for:
I'm building a home arcade/multi-console and I want to be able to hook my XBox (original, not 360) to the DVI input on a Flat-Panel Monitor.
How I THINK I can accomplish this:
Using THIS with THIS.
The issue:
My tech knowledge has gone the way of the dodo. (Hence why I'm more interested in my NES, Genesis, and SNES, than Quake LXII and Halo XXXVI.) I don't currently have a DVI-compatible Monitor, and don't want to drop $250 on my best guess. So, I figured I'd ask ye enlightened souls if...
A. This setup will work for what I want.
B. If there's a better/alternate way to achieve the same end.
I sincerely appreciate any and all help you can give. Cheers!

this is pretty much a different issue altogether. First off, it is not going to work. i will not go into the details, but the fact of the matter is that the cable you are looking at is only meant for devices that output component signals from a DVI port, ie certain video cards.Jack's Wasted Life wrote:Was going to start a new topic, but this is pretty similar, so I'll ask here:

now the question is why do you want to connect to a DVI monitor if you don't even have one? you are not going to get a digital signal out of the AV port anyhow, which means the best you can hope for is DVI-A, which is no different than using VGA in the first place. there are methods of getting VGA out of the xbox, but it really isn't straightforward:
http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_VGA_HOWTO
if you are really stuck on this component > DVI thing, you can always get an external scaler. however, you are likely able to get one of them new-fangled xbox 360s with the HDMI for roughly the same amount once they're out.

Sorry, was trying to save you the boring details. Basically I'm going to buy a display for my "arcade", and I'd like it to be a Flat-Panel monitor, as I can acquire one for much cheaper than a flat-panel TV with a component hookup. (Yes, it needs to be FP) The point is moot if I can't hook up the monitor, or have to spend an additional $200 on adapters, thus, I haven't bought one yet.bgnome wrote:now the question is why do you want to connect to a DVI monitor if you don't even have one?
As for why I mentioned Component -> DVI, well, it's simply that I found that cable, and was unable to find anything that looked as promising for Component -> VGA. Plus, since DVI supersedes VGA, so I figured I'd have more luck finding the former. I know the picture will be no different, so either way works really.bgnome wrote:you are not going to get a digital signal out of the AV port anyhow, which means the best you can hope for is DVI-A, which is no different than using VGA in the first place.
I appreciate that article, even though I think constructing my own cable would be a bit beyond my expertise (wood is more my area of focus). It did point to this little bugger however, and I may look into it further. $60 isn't too shabby when I would've had to spend $40 on the other cables. Seems like a lot of things I need to consider with it, but it may just work...
Ah, but I have an XBox. And as I said, it's going to be used for older gaming anyway, which is a very robust area for said console. It's also a cheaper and cleaner alternative to building a tower and loading all my systems & games onto it.bgnome wrote:if you are really stuck on this component > DVI thing, you can always get an external scaler. however, you are likely able to get one of them new-fangled xbox 360s with the HDMI for roughly the same amount once they're out.
Again, thanks for the help. Saved me some certain frustration, and the time/shipping to return two cables.
