No fighting mind you :P

Edit:
I'm mostly excited about this part "IBM has said it will sell a workstation with the chip starting later this year." :)

Seems Sony really is trying to stay on top this is the second generation where they have invested lots of money to make a custom chip for their gaming system.

Whats the deal with the comparisions? A supper computer on a chip and they compare it to the top 500 in the world?... Retards do comparisions like that, its not a fair and equal.
And why the hell did they ask about Windows? Everyone (but Microsoft it seems) know that BSD, Linux, MacOS X and UNIX are far superior to an OS that is behind and destend to be a flop when it comes out.

I know it was a collaberation, simalar to how the PowerPC was a collaberation of IBM, Motorala and Apple. The thing is the PCU for the PS2 was a custom chip designed almost solely for the PS2.

Chances are if its like this generation the release price will be $300, however as these things are going to be (as my techer puts it) "bleeding edge tech" it might be more. Hell I wouldnt be suprise by it being more the Genesis came out at about $400, or was that the Sega CD?

I somewhat agree with this. I mean, the lowest on the top 500 is like 128 2.4GHz P4s. No one expects this level of performance.
And why the hell did they ask about Windows? Everyone (but Microsoft it seems) know that BSD, Linux, MacOS X and UNIX are far superior to an OS that is behind and destend to be a flop when it comes out.
This is where I think you're off-base. Windows has well over 90% of the home user base. Say what you will, but if Cell can't run it, it doesn't have much of a future in the home PC market. Of course, Cell can run it by virtue of its beast-level powers--at worst, it could emulate it on one of its cores. Windows is definitely a selling point of processors. Don't make the mistake of thinking every computer user is a rebel geek. "Down with Microsoft!" is not everyone's motto.
However, since it sounds like it's basically running PowerPC at its core, I suppose Apple will probably get to use them in their new Macs :) How great would it be to finally have a system that can run both Windows and MacOS (without too much emulation overhead for either)?

It will have a multicore PowerPC chip (so there is still a possibility of it being a Cell), and an ATi graphics coprocessor with not just TV out, but also VGA out. It will be called Xbox 360, and come in three different packages - one would be a normal gaming system, the second would be the same except with a HDD, and the third would be a full gaming PC.

That thing is freaking tiny...how small of a micron process is that chip built with? Also, 243 million transistors doesn't seem to be much, especially for a "supercomputer". I'm suprised they can cool that tiny thing at 4Ghz, though...

I think that 10% non Windows is a conservative estimate BTW. 10% in the US alone, maybe. My networking teacher told us that Brazil's companies and government went fully Linux, along with 2/3rd of the companies in Europe.

On another note, my college is now offereing the Comptia RedHat course and certification. God hath answered my prayers a semester earlier than anyone here thought possible..
Warranty-Voiding fun!

Well they never mentioned these things were going into home PCs. The lowest aplecation they said were phones but IBM is planning workstations, and IBM doesnt really use Windows. They had AIX now linux, why the hell would they use windows.

I didnt read anything talking about the core being based on the PowerPC architechure. Considering IBM is involved I wouldnt say its impossible. And the thing about running window on the same maching as a mac, I recently heard about things call pentium cards. Full fleged P1 on a PCI, I aware that it will only support 98 at best, too bad they died out.

Edit - I'd also like to mention that While Windows controlles over 90% of the home user base in the U.S. all the Windows OS are not multi tasking (or true) not are they capibale of really taken advantage of many of the new super stellar or Hyper Threading technologies that are out there. Asking if it will work with windows to me is a load of bull. I cant see why as these are not going into areas that Microsoft has domancance.[/rant]

I was thinking of getting the redhat certification, but then I checked out the price to take the test. I'll just say I'd rather spend all that money on a new pc
