i need a small linux

i need a small linux for an old pc but the download must be very small under 20 megs. i plan to have it on a pration along whit windows. it has to be small because i have very slow dial up 2 keg a bit a second.

damn small linux is about as small as you can go without downloading a bunch of other crap how old of computer are we talking about? only 50 megs for a complete package

it a p3 500mhzs im not sure about ram the grapixs card is a 3dfx voodoo 3 8meg card.

Oh that should be able to handle any decent mainstram distro just fine. (Slackware, Ubuntu, Debian, SuSE...)

You want small, eh? Damn Small Linux is as small as you're going to get unless you don't want a GUI. http://www.damnsmalllinux.org It's 50 megs.

The smallest distros I've seen are HAL91, Pocket Linux, and tomsrtbt, both floppy distros. No GUI, no nothing. Just the shell and some basic tools. I've never really used them, but they seem about as useful as a DOS boot floppy.

is there a zip file that u can donw load because theres a lot of files to download and i dont know what ones to download

Download current.iso and burn it as an image, not as a file.

That's where a lot of people get confused. You don't drag the .iso file to the disc with Windows Explorer and burn it. You have to use a program like Nero or DeepBurner to burn the image to a disc. (The .iso file has all the formatting and file structure of the disc, so you have to write it that way to get it working.)

Remember that DSL isn't meant to be installed, so you're going to have to follow some command-line instructions to get it working on the hard drive. It's by no means impossible, but it's not just point-click-go like with other distros.

burn that file to a cd using nero (the cd burning software in windows wont let you)

Yep. Download the file "dsl-3.2-embedded.zip". Good luck at downloading it with dial-up.

that files is huge for me any way will probley take 3 to 4 hours. damm i want broadband. the extange in my area isnt upgraded for broadband yet. ah well 4 hours it looks like.
