Hey guys. I'm at a friend's house right now, and she has an old iMac running Mac OS 8.6. I've got a OS 9 installation disk here, and we want to put it on; problem is, though, there's this thing called KidDesk that boots every time you turn on the Mac. How the hell do you get it off??? And being the total Mac n00b that I am (Windows and Red Hat FTW!!!! ) how do you uninstall 8.6 from there and install 9? Thanks for the help!

Hmm... old-school iMac with a CRT, correct?
If I remember correctly, if you hold down the C key before the "Welcome to Macintosh" screen it should boot from the disc.
If that doesn't work you insert the disc and run the installer from there. I believe it will let you install 9 over 8.6 by just running the installer off the CD.

What BIOS Config?Turn on computer and go to the boot menu/bios config.

Really it should just be like any other OS.
Format the hardrive.

Try the control+alt+escape forcequit for kiddesk thingy.
Apple bios sucks like that, there's no real menu.
AH I REMEMBERED NOW
Hold down alt (option) as it turns on AFTER putting the CD in.
Just get a copy of OS 9, throw it in the CD try, then after it reboots, hit [command] [c], this should tell the system to boot from CD. The go through the typical installation process. There is no need for you to do anything with the hard drive before had, the installer and the partitioner will wipe the hard drive out for you.
Also if you are a big fan of Red Hat linux, there is a distro based off of it that runs on Macs, Yellow Dog. Check it out you might find it interesting, however I don't know if they offer a live-CD so you might be SOL on testing it out yourself.
