I've been reading Ben's site and here for a while and my birthday's coming up (potential money day) so I'm thinking maybe it's time to think about making my own portable. I don't know what console I want to do but I want it to be small, like original Gameboy, or maybe a bit bigger (although I'm willing to compromise on this as I realize it depends on the size of the original board, obviously, and I'm not pro enough to start doing anything special)
What do you guys think is the easiest console to portablize for someone just starting out. It would help if it's also a very well documented portable, for reference purposes and what not. If I use an NOAC or Flashback2 I'd like it to have a cart slot.

He meant that he wanted the finished product to be that small, which is a bad idea for a first portable. Try to just make it work, and then make a second one thats small when you know what to do.

If I can't find the fabled "super joyful stick happy fun stick player game" (or other pirate NAOC-style device) is there still hope? Such as an online store selling NAOCs? (I doubt this will be a problem though as I'm within half an hour of Pacific Mall, but you know, just in case) and, if my NAOC style device doesn't have a Famicom cart like Ben's did, can I still put an NES slot on it, 'cause I know if it were just a Famicom to NES problem, I could tear apart my copy of Gyromite (I don't even have ROB), but other wise I'm not exactly sure.
