Xbox disk read error

Well a friend of myn gave me his Xbox because it was broken. It has a disk read error, at first it would work the first or second time, but now it takes like 10000000 tries. Any suggestions on how to fix it (no smart ass comments like "get a new one duhhahahah")?

well there might be some problems, first check that the ribbon cable, that connects the drive to the motherboard is inserted correctly and in all the way, if that's not the case, it could be the drive itself, if you have a drive that'll work with the xbox, replace it and try the new drive out.

or could be like my gc, put in a cd laser cleaner (ones with a fine brush on em) stick that in a few time, still doesnt work? dismantle the dvd drive, and on the laser should be a POT turn that a tiny bit, put back togethor, hook it back up to the xbox and try a game, it should work now, if not keep slightly turning the POT till it works.

Well, not to be a smart ass, but Llama and other XBOX aftermarket sites have original XBOX drives on sale with huge discounts with the launch of the 360...

Take a Q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol. Then gently rub the laser in circles on the laser a few times. Then allow it to dry for a little bit.

And it should be good as new.

Ya but those Require a Modchip to install dont they? I dont think he really wants to buy a modchip.

Ohh I forgot I didnt that to my friend's GC and made it work a lot better (Kept Getting disc read errors while playin' Super Smash bros.

No they don't, they're original Xbox drives. You just open up your box and swap it. I was having the same problems, games taking a dozen or so tries to load, games hanging on me. Replaced the drive and everything worked fine.

must have been a unlocked dvd-rom then, because i have read up on xbox modding, and on the xbox itself, each and every xbox has its special code stored on it eeprom, on boot up, it checks the code on the locked hdd, if it matches it unlocks it and continues to boot, there is also a code on the dvd-rom drive, if you just swapped a xbox drive with another xbox drive, it wont work unless you hooked up to your computer and unlocked it , otherwise you will get a error screen tellin ya to send it in for maintenace.

Jongamer, I will tell you that (very respectfully) that you are wrong. I just swapped the DVD drive from one xbox to the other and it worked just fine. I had one of my xbox's DVD drive go out. I Modded my other one using the good DVD, saved all of my games and game saves to the modded hd ( I only had a few) then swapped out the drives. Now I have a modded xbox that plays my games from the harddrive and one that I can play all new games on. Swapping the DVD drive from one to another does not require a computer to unlock the drive. Only Xbox HDs need to be unlocked. If the laser disc cleaner does not fix it and you feel like taking it apart then do so, I have a link to a very informative guide if you choose this path. If you can afford $40 then I would just tell you to buy a replacement drive and install it. Much eaiser in the long run.

ok then why are there special programs for unlocking xbox dvd drives? or r those for making back-up games since normal dvd-rom drives cant read xbox games.

EDIT: NVM that is what it is for.

What site where you reading up on, I have used 2 different drives in my xbox.

Jongamer, you are confusing the Hard Drive with the DVD Drive.
While the HD is locked to a specific Xbox with a code in the EEPROM (EEPROM is an oxymoron, they should change that name) that matches one in the HD. In addition, the HD is locked so as to not work in a normal PC setting without using very refined (software) tools to unlock it.
