http://benheck.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=17161 made me think of all these systems, of which there is a limited supply, going to waste due to us frying them and such. Sure, there are clones available (now SNES clones! Woot!) but what about the original systems? They're no longer produced, and we're slowly whittling down their numbers.

I wonder who will own the very last SNES? NES? The LAST working Atari 2600?

im not overly concerned. you have to keep in mind that most of the systems you listed were manufactured in the MILLIONS.

Most of us will only go through maybe 10-20 systems max. There are tens of millions of each console made. They'll be around for a long time.

Who says Ben will have the last 2600? I've got 4 of them, and the heavy sixer is only coming apart for a complete cleaning and restoration, and I've got a dead one to pull parts from, so it's not going to die on me anytime soon.

According to Wikipedia there were about 40 million 2600s sold over its lifetime. If you guess about 1/3 of those are still around, you're still left with more than 10 million. Besides the 2600 is so loved in popular culture and the geek world that it is immortal.

There were millions upon millions of those consoles produced, and failed portablization attempts are only a drop in the bucket. There will always be at least one 2600 in the world in our lifetimes. (Namely the one in the garage.)

Saying building portables will destroy all the [insert console here] in the world is like saying spraying Raid on a colony will cause ants to go extinct. It's bull- you know.

I wonder how many people have posted things like "omg u r gunna destroy all the ataris there rare!!1!111!!!1111eleventy!@1" here...

If you bust a few ps3's trying to make a portable I think they will be all out.

I doubt that those consoles will ever be gone, even if they are you could easily remake the Hardware and the case. It's so easy to do now-a-days.

I know someone who manufactures Altair 8800 replicas. Even if some one game system starts to approach extinction, chances are someone out there will start manufacturing replicas.

yeah, I think the same thing all the time. im overly paranoid though, but the one I think of the most is SNES mini. USE THE DAMN FC TWIN.

You people are thinking short term. What about in 50 years? 100?

Triton says in his almighty mod-ly voice: "Blah blah blah! Blah blah blah blah blah! 40 million produced! Only 1/3 left! Blah blah blah!"

But if you do the math, that means in another 10-20 years they'll be mostly extinct.

And replicas don't count.
