Sonic Xtreme video on youtube

Post by Gump-in-space »

Sonic Xtreme was a game that was never released, made for the Saturn in 1996, but it wasn't finished by the holiday season and the project got cancelled. So, here are some of the levels. I see websites with screenshots, but none with these particular videos.

I only watched the first one, but it looks pretty cool. why wasnt it finished?

EDIT:

look what I found, if it was originally going to be for 32x, that would have been very interesting.

The developement wasrunning by a matrix system, where none of the departments had much communication, so if the art team made a desert tile set and the music team made a ice track the two wouldn't know of the error untill both parts were finished. Sega kept ordering the team to change engines to make the game with, and a bunch of guys bailed out. By late 1996 there was only one member left working 24-7 on the game untill he got extremely sick and had to go to the hospital for weeks. When the game wasn't finished by Christmas and Sega couldn't get anyone to finish it, the game was put on hold untill SOA president Bernie Stolar announced that the Sega Saturn was not the future in June of 1997. Then the game was cancelled while Sega looked to develop its next system.

A Sonix Xtreme for the 32x seems a lot more believable after watching this 32x Tech Demo. If SEGA had only pulled itself together...

What about Sonic Adventure? That was an excellent game.

:*(...watching Sonic eXtreme made me think of a better time. A time where I played the PC version of Sonic CD non stop as I put on my Sega Watch to watch Sonic the Hedgehog on TV after beating Green Hill Zone for the umpteenth time on Sonic 1. The game seemed awesome though, I mean like, it was technically 2D, but then again it was 3D, but it did seem cool with the geometric effects. The 32X would seriously be able to handle it, and Saturn damn straight, and even with a little speed update  Doesn't the new PSP game Sonic Rivals eerily have the premise of Sonic Extreme? Anyway, the game was good from what I saw, and if Sega just didn't mess up and get all egotistic (anyone who disagrees can PM me, believe me, Sega got really full of itself), maybe Sega would still be an awesome company, and not abusing the Sonic Team label horribly. It just goes to show, that you shouldn't squander all your money on trying to prolong the death of a calm console (Dying Genesis..."HEY, LETS ADD THE 32X"...Small jump yet dies..."LETS ADD DA CD!"...FMV's suck....Dead...."). Just to go a bit off topic, do you guys think Sega would still be in the race if they had spent less time doing crap and just getting exclusivity and rights?

Genesis wasn't really dying, but really just winding down. As with Super Nintendo the two had a few more years left in them. Sega thought if they gave the Genesis more capability it could still help fight in the Next-Gen wars. but when the Playstation was announced with its high capabillities the Saturn got a total overhaul while the Genesis with its freshly released add-ons seemed like overpriced junk. Nobody was buying it, so Sega cancelled it.

P.S. By "a few more years" I was talking about the fact I own Madden '97 on Saturn and Madden '98 on Genesis.

If Sega pulled itself together so that section A wasn't working on one project while section B was working on another, I think it may well have stayed in the console race.

According to a gaming magazine I read a while ago, the Dreamcast wasn't doing all the poorly during the launch of the PS2. It may well have managed to survive.

I honestly did think that Sega was becoming rather intolerable. I know that the Genesis was winding down, but they should have come to terms with that, and limit the software production on that (I'm serious, Madden '98 came out for the Genesis, and if I recall correctly, Blitz came home for the game (went to N64 in 1999...of course Madden 98 technically did come out in 97, but two years difference of the release of a 16-bit game to a 64-bit game...wtf?)...but Sonic eXtreme could have been a killer app, as the colors did some cool with a decent frame rate and nice speed to it. Man...wtf.
