I want to replace the NES's red LED with a blue one, and I don't quite understand the voltage requirements etc.
Maplin sell 5mm blue LEDs which seem perfect. They have datasheets, but I guess the important data is the forward voltage and reverse voltage.
I presume that for the indicator LED, the NES produces +5V DC
This LED is rated at 'Forward voltage at If=20mA: 4.0V ', and has a reverse voltage max of 5V
I'm confused as to what is relevant, the forward or the reverse voltage. Here is the page, if it helps

Would the NES' voltage damage the LED?

All that matter is the Forward voltage and current of the said LED. Red LEDs usually require less voltage and current since red is of a lower energy spectrum then Blue/Violet.
I would assume it would be a straight swap for a Red LED to Blue LED conversion.
