NES ipod controller

Post by A_Username »

This guy made an ipod dock/controller out of a NES controller. He can even play doom with it :D I found the video on youtube and then found the hackday article. Read/watch more below.

Read the How To, it's not as impressive as it first looks. One button and three directions is all that works, and it requires internal modding of the ipod (just tapping into it's switches).

It'd be more impressive if they hacked an iPod remote/emulated the iPod remote control signal to the NES controller buttons.

I started a project like this, but it never really got off the ground because I couldn't get it to compile under iPL. It used an actual NES controller hooked up to the iPod via serial port.

It wouldn't be very hard, check here for a lot of information on the NES signals. The ipod already outputs serial at TTL levels, so no shifting is necessary. PM me if you want to see the beta of my code (written in C). It's just an interface.

I would assume Forward, Left, and Right. You'd have to do a lot of turning around. The one button I assume would be fire. Didn't you need a button for opening doors in doom, though? Hm. Been a long time since I've played it. Perhaps not.
