installing SLAX

Well I have a computer that needs major maintenance, so i figured sense it boots weird, why not try to get rid of the bad stuff through Linux. So i downloaded SLAX ver 5, and burned it to a cd, I put it in the drive, and (yea, I'm extremely noob with operating systems...)it said Failure To Load OS. Turns out the main HD died, so i put in a nice new one, to make it a Linux only computer. Same problem. How the heck do i install this? I would have searched, but i have a dang stupid filter on my computer that blocks things like that for some unknown reason....

Firstly, slax is a bad thing to place on your PC. Since it is originally a LiveCD, it WILL be temperamental. I would suggest Debian in it's place. As a matter of fact, Debian Etch is stable enough to be used. Download the fist iso in a set (they have Gnome or KDE isos available) and install.

Secondly, seems like a ram failure from your description. I had that same error come up a few times myself. Try installing new ram or adding more. How much does the PC actually have? You might also want to do a memtest, it's available on most Linux ISOs.

My computer has a gig of ram in it, I'm pretty sure thats not it lol.

Does the optical drive come before or after the hard drive in the boot sequence? The hard drive might come first, which would cause a problem.

If it's not, change it to an order such as this:

1. Floppy
2. CD-ROM
3. USB
4. Hard drive(s)
5. LAN

The exact order doesn't really matter, just put the hard drive second to last, with network boot after it. You'll be able to boot from other things more easily.

Yeah go from a distro that offers a simple way to install a Slackware installation on a computer to using one of the most difficult distributions out there, yeah debian (pure) is not used often. I would suggest if you're a newbie to the whole Linux scene get an Ubuntu distribution. There very user friendly and easy to navigate and manage.
