Is it possible to set up my own webserver out of a ftp server?

well, yeah, of course you can setup a webserver with a ftp server, the only thing is it'll only be ftp, and I guess you'd probably want http

So could I make a site using something like Apache? I finally got my Linux book that talks about it, so I'll see about experimenting with that on my mac.

yeah, apache is the most common linux webserver program that I know of, and it's pretty easy to configure.

Swee, didnt know PoD used that. Now all I have to do is sit down and read a technical manual.... oh god this is going to suck.

Also, if you're running linux check for this file: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
If you have that you probably already have apache installed. Most distros come with it installed too
