How to make transparent PNGs

Post by XPCportables »

I have been hard at work today making psp backups of my PSone discs. It all goes smoothly except for the menu images. I want to put an image that replaces the Hot Shots 2 description with my own custom description. The problem is, I can't get it to be transparent. How do I make transparent PNGs?

Use Photoshop or Irfanview or Paint.NET.

I've made a generic one:

Wait, you want like slightly transparent, like the descritpion is? You are going to have to use Photoshop or Paint.NET for that.

no, I just want it to be so that you can see the text without the white background, so that you can see the image behind it. I don't need anything fancy like that.

If you want to make it look halfway decent, you would probably need to use a program that handles semitransparency (like Photoshop, GiMP, or Paint.NET).

If the program you're using supports even 1-bit transparency, and has layers, do this:

1. Create a new layer with the image in it. (Duplicate the background layer)
2. Hide the background layer
3. Select the areas you want transparent (magic wand tool)
4. Clear the selected areas (Backspace or Delete)
5. Export as .png

If your program (Ifranview? Wuzzat?) doesn't support layers, download GiMP Portable from Portableapps.com or go get a copy of Paint.NET.

Are you sure whatever you're using can handle .PNG transparency correctly?

Ifranview, last I checked, just viewed and converted images, fairly badly at that. It's not an editor like, The Gimp, or Paint.NET

Here you go.

I had to redo the top text because just removing the black around it made it look like crap. It's pretty close.

Link please, they probably stole them from me (I gave someone permission to use them, but I don't remember where lol). I even have the PSD's for them!

I got them from DCEMU, but it looks like DCEMU is down right now. I've been trying to get on all day with no luck. I don't remember the guy's name, but he started the thread so it should be easy to find when they come back up.

He'd posted a ZIP with icons for about a dozen games, and yours were in there. I just checked the ZIP, and noticed it was called 'VB_Masters PS1 pack', and didn't make the connection.
