Problem with computer

Hi,
my younger brother recently installed a game called ISPY spooky mansion on the computer, ever since than the computer has been exetremely slow. I unistalled it and it still is, it litterally takes 2-3 minutes to make the screen saver go away (which is now just a black screen), and sometimes I will have to hit Ctrl+alt+delete on the screen saver, and it will say "not responding". I ran a virus check and didnt find anything. can someone please help?

Reinstall Windows, or install a better OS, like say Linux.

I have a fealing that he is trying not to be that drastic. And there is nothing wrong with windows, I have every safety mesure turned off on mine and still go virus/mal-ware free. How is that for a 'inferior' OS?


Anyways, on subject: Go to run and type in msconfig, click enter and go to the Startup Tab. Once there turn off any procs you dont use. a lot of unused programs hide here and get turned on when you log in. If that doesnt help then go look at all the folders in 'Program Files' and if any look suspicious make sure they arnt ones you want then uninstall if it has the option and ether way delete the folder.

If nether of those help, then use system restore to a point before the game got installed.

Hope this helped, but as a note about the last post, don't switch OSes for something so small, it can't be fixed then think about it. But if it can be then keep what your used to. (I can fix most problems of my problems in under 4 minutes.)

Well you've uninstalled the program, now run anti-spyware (spybot and adaware), run anti-malware (A-Squared), and ensure that there are no lingering backround processes running. Doing all this will not be easy, if you don't have the patients, backup all your important information to hard drive or DVD/CD and reinstall Windows.

Windows has a nasty problem of once it's installed or once it's set on the road of neglect there's no way to turn it back completely. Be prepared to have to reinstall. I would also inform you that there is a small file either under C:\ or the Windows folder that hold the hardware information, you copy that and then put that into the new isntall and the machine will not require a new re-activation. Do a google search to find this information, I don't remember where I found it.

Perhaps the game buggered up the registry.

Try AMUST Registry Cleaner. I use it all the time, and it can make a surprising difference on really bad machines.

Also run CCleaner. It will purge old junk you don't need safely. (Make it part of your PC cleaning routine.)

Of course run antispyware tools.

Startup Control Panel is a great tool for disabling startup programs.
