So, you're making a Linux set-top box?

Why not just buy some Mini-ITX motherboards and use them instead of old, slow Pentium 2s?

Sorry but this really just sounds like a PC...

Pentium IIs because I have a computer I got for free and it has a PII processor in it. And yes, it is a PC. But it plays on a TV set, can use memory cards, and you can get a microphone for internet stuff.

What i'm doing when my free PC parts get here. With a lot of FPS games and a headset, with a older version of Windows.

Well, I'll try not to comment too much about the originality of this "build my own console" stuff. Oops, I just did!

Anyway, I agree that a readily available Mini-ITX would be better. Pentium II's and their motherboards are not available new anymore, and ideally a homebrew console could be assembled by other people in your 'in crowd'.

I have to agree. Not for the fact that Mini-itx is faster, but for the fact the Pentium II is no more. It's CPU that's over 5 years old, isn't produced anymore and the same code it runs will run on just about any x86 comatible computer.

Mini-itx give you everything in one package. First you have built-in audio and video (includes composit video out and S-Video out), all the basic computer compoints, namely I/O ports. It's also only a little over $100 for the lowest end machine.

I also have to ask what kind of Linux variation are you going to use? Linux by itself is just a kernel, not going to do much if you have no means to interface with it. So you going to design a whole GUI to run on it? What kernel number are you going to use, a 2.4.x or a 2.6.x?

None will make it past planning stage? BlackBox already has, what i'm doing doesn't count as a console because it is basically a PC, just in a fancy case with controllers.

@ Shockslayer: Brilliant!

@ Most of you guys: You aren't exactly understanding this system beyond its processor. The computer, a Compaq Presario 5441, is a small computer. When things are properly put together, I doubt this thing will not be larger than an Xbox. If I can make this work I will move up to a mini ITX computer, but I'm not going to throw money at something if it's not going to work. Much rather use my old computer.

Also, I'm beefing this thing up to four controllers, making 6 Usb ports, 2 for memory cards.

@ sameguy: Maybe. I don't know how far this will go. This is an experiment, and the console will be much more powerful. If I complete this test, I'm willing to compete. Untill then... Why have a small scale console war with these weak game machines that will likely not hit online store shelves?
