New to modding, easy first projet to not screw anything up?

Im new to technical modding and in the future want to be able to find a way to get a console to work next to a pc. Like have Windows and then the option to play a console game all working together. But before that I of course want to start small, I was wondering if anyone knows any projects that are not over $50 that I could do. Also something fairly easy as well as interesting? Thanks a lot!

Pick up a commodore 64 dtv. Either a radioshack hummer game or just a plain joystick version. (both are commodore 64's) Basicly you can mod them to become "real" comodore 64's

ok thanks. i was looking more along the line of video games only, but sure why not, i guess i can try it. any other ideas?

Buy one of the namco controllers and modify it so the controller is using a directional pad instead of the big joystick.

You can buy ben's book and build an atari or NES portable using his pre cut plates, but you do have to cut the board on the atari

The commodore 64 has plenty of games. It was more a gaming device then computer!

Well either of the C64 DTVs (verson 1 or Hummer) it's not best. If you want it to be a good portable you have to do a video fix and that requires replacing surface-mount resistors, something newbie and evne many of us here are not that great at and don't feel comfortable trying.

Using a Radica Genesis DTV would be one of the best options. first it's very easy to just slap a screen on that and your off. If you want more then just some patients you can can get the rom chip off and solder on a cartridge slot.

Another good choice would be the Atari Flashback (v2). This is a full Atari-on-a-chip that's compatible with the old controllers, and if you want you can solder a cartridge slot on the board (has the contacts), and then you have more then the standard 30 builtin games. Plus to our knowledge no one has made a portable out of this.

NOAC! The SuperJoy systems use NES On A Chip... They are very easy to work with, usually have well labeled PCBs (printed Circuit Boards) and don't 'really' require any heavy modding. They come with a ton of games on them, and can easily be modified (or adapted) to use the original NES game carts!

Cheap, easy, and very fun. You can find the LCD games at pretty much any stores toy department.

The dtv1 doesn't have the color problem

According to this site they do have that problem. Infact the hummer has it too, and I haven't looked to much into the DTV v.2 PAL/NTSC one as it'd cost $50+ to even obtain one.

Actually that's a chroma problem. The pictures a bit fuzzy. Nothing you can do bout it. Only hummer and dtv 2 have color problems. (just believe me ok?)

(those have it because of the faulty resistors)
