Its called Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD), and its expected to hold upwards to about 3.9 Tera bytes of info. Thats a lot of Video. Thats like 3900x more info capacity than my current computer.

From the looks of things, they are the size of a CD. What would make them perfect is they were indestructible.

I find this thing Intriguing, I could fit my entire DVD library (possibly 102+ actual movies, don't want to count individual discs) in WMV format on one of these discs.

well yeah thats nothing compared to the protein coated disc] It holds 50 terabytes.

Now we just have to wait for our 1000 core 3.2THz processors, 2 terabytes of RAM, GeForce 880000GTXYZ with a modest 0.5 terabytes of RAM, with a cold fusion reactor to power it all.

Storing information on a disc using holograms isn't a new thing. Years ago Popular Science had a small article talking about that technology, and how at the time a single disc could hold 200GB of data. Seems that they've been constaintly working on moving the lasers they use for those discs to a smaller band-frequency.

Well I don't think it's going to become someting consumers are going to use in the next few years, it's really a promisable way to do whole backups of information/systems.

Better yet, a computer that can calculate anything, instantaneously, due to the fact that it knows it will eventually have time to complete it in the future. Paradoxical computing!

But seriously, I forsee a much different future for so-called digital media. With constantly increasing internet bandwidth all digital media will be purchased online and streamed or downloaded to the family's computer, which will interface with every digital device in the house. As you all know, this is occuring to some extent already, but I forsee it eventually supplanting the conventional optical disc entirely before advanced technologies like Protein discs become available.

I can envision some pretty cool wireless technologies being developed. Neutrinos, for example, could be useful if we learned to detect them accurately- your signal range would be virtually infinite; you could even transmit and receive wireless data Through the planet, from China to America.
