PS3 release violence = stupid

I was watching Fox news this morning and they showed a map of the US with markers for all the different towns that had reported major violence or thievery on opening day - it was all over the place! Grrr...

... I don't know why stores allowed people to camp out like that. That news article mentions a Best Buy in Boston that handed out tickets to the first people to show up, so they could go home and be safe and warm until the console was released. Seems to me like the smarter way to handle it. I mean, people going retarded over hot items in short supply is nothing new. Remember Tickle Me Elmo? So at this point, if we know that the public at large turns into idiotic savages over product shortages like this, shouldn't the stores step up and take some initiative? Some responsibility? Perhaps help curb the retardation before it takes hold?

Then again, I don't know. Maybe having someone get gunned down while waiting in line outside your store is just great for business.

Several of the Best Buy locations in my general area sold tickets, so people didn't have to wait outside in 50 degree temperatures, 40 mile per hour wind gusts and torrential rains. They're going to ship more by Christmas, so why go through all this effort for a game?

I don't get it. Putting yourself in danger of getting shot, trampled, or pushed head-on into a pole isn't worth it in my opinion. But if you did it, lived, AND got a PS3, congratulations. Have fun with that game, or at least turn a good profit on eBay. I'll stay home and play the 11 year old Playstation that's still hooked up in the living room.

I don't know, it makes some pretty good sense to me.
I'd never wait in line for a PS3, but if I wanted one, it just makes more sense to find somebody that did camp out, and hit him with a tire iron until he gives it to me.
besides, they're only gamers. ...sony gamers at that.

people *do* realize that more than enough of these systmes will be available next year, when the games have become less lame, right? And they'll be $50-100 cheaper and have a pack-in by that time.

Ok didn't something almost like this happen last year with the release of the Xbox 360? Namely armed people robbing stores, mugging people and even breaking into houses to get these thing? The only thing that makes this any different is that a person was shot twice for not giving it up, and that is sad that he suffered. I just dont' think this needs to be hyped up anymore then it already is. Reason being, two words, Jack Thompson. I know I'm going to hear more about that moron saying that video games led to this and that it's got to stop.

I think the dumbest part is that this all springs from the "I GOTTA HAV TAHT NOW!!!1!1!!1!eleventy!" attitudes of the raving fanboys. Sure, there's a limited supply now, but they're going to make more PS3s. If more people could just wait a while we wouldn't have problems of this severity.

Jeez, all that violence over a game.

From that article it seems that the PS3 wasnt the reason for all thh violence (well sorta) there was armed robbers were just after their money no the PS3, which takes some of the fire away from the video games = apocalypse theory

And also you've all seen how much the PS3 are selling for on ebay so its easy picking for criminals, steal from gamers (who lets face it arent exactly tough in most cases) and make a swift mint.

So i think most of the robberies are motivated by the high price of selling it on rather than fanboys pushed over the edge and driven to premeditated violence just because they couldnt get one

I don't understand why so many people are standing in line. If they really wanted the PS3 then why didn't they preorder it? I mean your not gonna get the PS3 someone else preordered are you?

Well, you could preorder it, but you have to be there VERY, VERY early. Otherwise, you'll be waiting till March for one. I', surprised that I haven't heard much from Japan about shortages. I know they only got 100,000 but nothing other than problems with the system.

Pre-Orders didn't hold up for many places. I had heard of a Best Buy that offered out Pre-Orders on a first come first serve, then turned around and did a raffle for who gets one soonest. Another had over a hundred people camped outside and only had 30 PS3 in-stock, so people were shoving and pulling to get to them before the others.

If we did it in a simple civilized manner, namely Pre-Orders are the only way you can get one of these systems, then we don't have to worry about this kind of crap. Hell they could make it better by have a police car just sit by the enterence of the stores that are selling these consoles. There we have two way to keep people from killing each other to get a PS3/Wii and we have a way to have people avoid getting mugged or shot over money or the system.

Yeah, at least nintendo isnt advirtising something they don't have. The only reason I'm getting wii at launch (leaving in ten minutes!!!!!) is because it'll be fun, I have the money, and it's an expirience. This is something I can brag about. My other friend is like "I got a preorder and my dad is a client for nintendo so I get it for free!!!!!!" and then I'm just like "I worked all this summer to make money for the wii, and Im going to sit for eight hours to get mine first thing." He also is getting his in January (away for christmas) So I win.

You really think Sony would do that. First the Playstation/Video Game portion of the company is the major winner for income, and yet it's also expected to suffer several million or as high as a billion dollar loss over last year. Sony really couldn't afford not to release now. Thier problem really as I see it is that they put way too much new technology in the PS3. BlueRay, Cell processor and a PS2 on a chip to say the least. It's just Sony pulling a Microsoft, putting too much work on a too little deadline.
