Building your own wii devkit?

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

Building your own wii devkit?

Post by turbolover »

I was thinking that since the wii architecture is merely a beefier version of the gamecube's, couldn't you make a beowulf cluster of 2-3 gamecube's in order to mimic the power of the wii and then write on that?

Why bother? You'd have to implement the structure of the Wii such as the new DVD firmware and IR attachments AND controller architect. By the time you figure this out, the Wii 2 will be out.

Aren't the official devkits under $2000? Why bother?

What will likely happen is that either DVD encryption will be cracked and you could run any binary you wanted on the Wii, or the Virtual Console system will be hacked so homebrew games could be downloaded.
It would of course be ideal if Nintendo accommodated for homebrew programmers, but given their track record, I doubt that would happen.

Ah the CPU the Wii is going to use is going to be closer to the G5 the the G4, and the G4 is what the GameCube used. Meaning that a Power Mac G5 would be a better idea then a cluster would.

If that is true then yeah buying a dev kit shouldn't be an issue. Sounds a little like the Dreamcast, who's dev kits were that cheap.

If you could find someone to leak the devkit, it would be the best option to do that.

If Nintendo is run anything like Microsoft or Sony is all you need to know is either someone who works for either Nintendo or maybe even ATI to front for you. When the original xbox came out i had an opportunity to get a devkit of it, both offical hardware and software kits, because of who i knew at nVidia, but didnt have the money at the time.
