PS2 Controller Problems

I pulled out my PS2 controllers so I could play some GT4, but for some reason they don't reapond when I push the buttons.I know it's not the PS2 itself because the DVD remote works, and it worked with a PSone DualShock I had lying around. (Besides, the PS2 sat upright on my shelf untouched the whole time.)

They were stored in an open plastic box on the floor, so they may have had a bit of weight on them. One doesn't do anything, while the other responds to the down button. I tested on the PS2 Browser / System Configuration screen (booted with no disc). The one that responds to down moves back up when "Analog" is hit.

I took apart the completely unresponsive one. The black rubber pads under the buttons (not on the switch membrane) are shiny. I remember I fixed a keyboard with a broken space bar by scuffing up the black rubber pad. Would that fix them? If so, would it change the touch sensitive button feel at all?

<s>And just for the time being, can I make do with an old Dual Shock for PS2 games?</s> Never mind that; my Intec Screenpad will do in a pinch. It would still be nice to fix the DualShock 2s.

EDIT: oh, and when I initially booted GT4 (before I knew the controllers had problems), I was able to scroll around the map screen using the analog stick with either controller, so that part should be OK.

do you know if all of the buttons don't work?

On controller 1: I tried Start, X, O, Triangle, and the D-pad. None worked. Both analog sticks did.

Controller 2 is the same as controller 1 except Down on the D-pad works. I haven't opened it up yet.

ok I have an Idea, scuff up the black pads on the buttons and see if it works. If, however, it doesn't work, check the pins where the ribbon cable, on the button film sheet thing, connects to the controller's mainboard. It seems more likely to me, that the button pad film ribbon is not making a complete connection, than that the individual buttons have all just decided to stop working at random.

Yeah, just take em apart and look for short circuts and clean them out i guess...
