Getting the Xbox to output RGB (again)

Post by Sir Games-A-Lot »

OK, I picked up a 21" NEC p1150 monitor at the hamfest, and it has RGB in. It appears it can accept composite sync (I can't tell if composite means "a composite of H and V sync signals" or "the sync signal portion of an NTSC and/or PAL composite video signal". It wouldn't really make sense that it would be the 15 some-odd Khz signal from the composite video since the minimum operating frequencey listed in the manual is 31Khz but I still can't be sure), separate V and H syncs, or sync on green.

Here is a page with simple specs on it and here is the manual in pdf form.

Now I found these two pages detailing the Xbox video pinouts:

According to the one website there is no 31khz RGB mode on the Xbox but, if that's true what do pins 4 and 16 do if they don't provide 31Khz V and H sync respectively? And what, if anything, happens when pins 17 and 19 are grounded?

If anyone has experimented in this direction with either this, or a similar monitor, and/or getting 31Khz RGB out of an Xbox (I think it can be done with chipped Xbox's running special firmware but I don't know if that means it will work during gameplay or not.) I would very much appreciate any help.

I'm no RGB expert, but it looks like you need an upscan converter.

IF, I were to get one , does any one think it makes sense to tap off the RGB color signals and send those directly to the monitor and use the 31Khz sync that the XRGB-3 puts out? Here's a diagram of what I was thinking:

That would seem to keep the RGB signal unpolluted and and gives me the sync signal I need. Any way before I invest $300 in the signal cooker I'm gonna build a test cable to see if the NEC monitor can use 15Khz signal on the BNC connector labeled "composite", any thoughts on whether this would kill the monitor if I use the wrong sync frequency?

couldn't you just isolate the green and C-sync to achieve a sorta RGB?
