Reeds. (instrument reeds, mind ya)

Post by Klefmung »

Today in band, we were testing, and the assistant band director was going around testing people on what we were testing. The main band dude, who was a reed instrument and majored on a reed instrument started showing us some cool stuff to do with reeds. We would mod them. We would shave them off a little, suck on them in different ways, make "tunnel" like things to give it a better tone, and more. Does anyone have any more information on this? I mean single reed. I really wanna learn more about improving my sound like this/

depends what you're after and what instrument you're playing

on a saxophone if you shave a little bit of each side then you get a clear slightly higher tone

also postition of the reed can affect tone and timbre, having it far forward is good fro bassy notes and having it futher back is good for higher notes

We did more insane things. We took razor blades and shaved off the back of the reeds to make it thinner, we made a chasm through the middle all the way accross it to make a cooler tone, and we sucked on the back to chose holes. then we shaped it exactly to our specifications. Clarinets and saxes were doing it. single reeded instruments.
