How a crash would happen. Get hit, you say "Oh, -", your life is instantly ended by the tank exploding. At least it would be painless to you, those outside the vehicle might live but have lasting damage. $10k for a hydrogen conversion, dying instantly in a wreck, priceless.gamer2 wrote:You could possibly make a moving bomb

This translates directly into smaller and fewer storage tanks.
Once the Hydride is "charged" with Hydrogen, the Hydrogen becomes chemically bonded to the chemical. Even opening the tank, or cutting it in half will not release the Hydrogen gas. In addition, you could even fire incendiary bullets through the tank and the Hydride would only smolder like a cigarette. It is in fact, a safer storage system than your Gasoline tank is.
Then how do you get the Hydrogen back out? To release the Hydrogen gas from the Hydride, it simply needs to be heated. This is either done electrically, using the waste exhaust heat, or using the waste radiator coolant heat.
Our kits heat the Hydride tanks electrically, and as soon at the Hydride is sufficiently warm, Hydrogen is released from the tanks and the on-board computer detects the presence of Hydrogen pressure. The fuel system remains in "Hydrogen" mode until the tank pressure begins to drop. If the tanks run out of Hydrogen, the engine will seamlessly switch over to Gasoline, which enables the car to run conventionally until the Hydrogen tanks are refilled.

Biodeisel is pretty neat. With little modification you can run any diesel vehicle off refined cooking oil. (Mostly you need to change the feul delivery system, because the rubber hoses don't work well with the oil.) The best part is the exhaust smells like fried food. Mmm... cholesterol-y!
Ethanol is another option. I think existing gas pumps can handle it, and it works just like gasoline (in the eyes of the average consumers, anyway). I'm not 100% sure about this, but I've read it.
Hydrogen seems like the most far-fetched system, out of the liquid/gas based alternative fuels out there. (I'm not including electricity, wind, pedals...) The gas has to be under high pressure or extremely cold temperature to be dense enough to hold enough to supply a car for a long distance.
Anyone see the electric Jeep Cherokee on hack a day?
Too bad the range sucks... I could only drive to class and back once before it needs to be rechagred. (For now I'll stick with my 34 MPG midsize sedan...)

Besides, if you can get old cooking oil for free, you can make fuel for roughly 75 cents a gallon, which includes paying for the filtering equipment.

Ethanol is already used in gasoline. Namely it's an addtive, it both boost perfomance and lowers cost. The problem we have right now is that unless the vehicle is Flex-Fuel or the engine is rebuilt to handle it, the enthanol will dry parts of the engine so making it a damaging item.bicostp wrote:Ethanol is another option. Yep, if it's a gas it will have to be under pressure or chilled to a liquid state. However what most people think when they hear the idea of a hydrogen fueled car is the Hindenburg. The problem is that Hydrogen is stable and non-flamable when not in incontact with oxygen. Even then if it were to mix and ignite the pressure has to be beyond 15 psi (mixed) for something like an explosion. If a tank of Hydrogen were to start leaking (not ruptured) the gas wouldn't be explosive or flamable til it mixed so there is no consern that you car or anything like that would be like an oversized pipe bomb.Hydrogen seems like the most far-fetched system, out of the liquid/gas based alternative fuels out there. Yeah caught that. I'm more impressed with what was mention on Systm episode 6. A group of guys were taking Toyota (I think) or Ford hybrids and out fitting them with more batteries, and enabling the EV (electric vehicle) mode on the cars, and offering the AC plug charge option (charge over night on 110AC power). So on a full charge you can do most of your driving, if you were to do say highway driving on a full charge you can get 80-100 MPG, once the batteries are dead it would be about 60 MPG.Anyone see the electric Jeep Cherokee on hack a day?Too bad the range sucks... If I had enough money laying around I totally would try to build my own "Car of the Future" I think it'd be a fun challenge.
As for oil, I think "How Stuff Works" nails it - we'll never actually "run out", it'll just become too expensive to find it all. I guess that means running out. However I definitely think we'll see the end of oil cars within our lifetimes. It will take longer than we think though because it seems hybrids are all the rage and guess what - they still use gas. Full electrics just won't have the power people want, at least for now.
This Tesla car (which ironically surely uses DC) looks cool but I doubt any of use could afford one.
