To relocate or not to relocate...

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

To relocate or not to relocate...

Post by Kurt_ »

Here's the deal. I want to relocate my SNES's cartridge slot. The problem is, I also want to turn it 90°, so all the wires will be different lengths and such. It wouldn't matter if I didn't (I'd save myself about 1/2-3/4" on my hopefully 1337ly small SNES) but if I didn't is there anything I should know?

Some exmaples would be wobbly games crash or if you hit it against your knee it'll crash too and such.

What are the disadvantages of relocating the cartridge slot? Is it hard? I don't want to wreck a SNES but I don't want a portable that sucks either.

Well, when It came to relocating my n64's cart slot, It took awhile, and it didnt work. Just make sure you go slowly (2+ days) and it shold work great.

Disadvantages If done quick: small unnoticeable errors
Disadvantages if done slowly: NONE

Just take-a some time

its kinda hard, kinda easy if ya know what im saying. if you do a decent job tinning and stripping all of your wires before hand it can go by really quickly and pretty easily. but if you just do a half assed job your in for one hell of a fun time  and rotating it 90 degrees is easy, just make sure your wires are kinda long

I was planning something like this:

There's not much else in between the cartridge slot and the board other than a piece of plastic to protect the board from beinge exposed (on top of all those wires from the top of the board up to the back of the cartridge slot)

I'm thinking that I could make a cardboard case mock-up and THEN solder everything with the cartridge in the right location. I'm even thinking of wiring from the bottom and around the board to the cartridge slot on the top. (In the un-used space created by the bottom of the PSOne screen)

its not like wires take up to much space why go through the hassle trying to solder shorter wires to save such little space

Just like what turbo said, spend more time tinning your wires. It makes the job a lot easier, although I've never relocated a cart slot, I find that tinning them makes soldering in general much easier.

That looks great. I think i'll do it like that. Only with enameled wire.
