dslite.... ugly?

Post by timmeh87 »

ok well this might be a bit spammy, but its not like im the only one producing spam around here :P

i had the oportunity to see a dslite in person for the first time yesterday (up until now i havent even looked at pictures), and i actually thought it was pretty damn ugly. the colours are fine and all that, but the actual shape was.. well. i dunno. i dont like it. its not even much smaller than a regular DS, at least not small enough to justify having the GBA cart stick out like it does, which i think is a really dumb idea.

and i also dont like how it uses a completely different stylus and power supply, was that really nesscary? ok - stylus, maybe. but i dont think its was nessecary to introduce yet another power adapter into our homes. the original ds one was pretty good; it could have been used in nintendo portables for the next decade without becoming obsolete. and now it is.

and finally, it had a dead (or stuck, rather - its red) pixel. now, im not one to complain about dead pixels, and im not complaining now either. but the origninal DS seemed to have a much lower occurence of dead pixels, and im just sort of disappointed in nintendo for not holding back more 'defective' units... it kinda makes them look bad.

Hmm, I hadn't heard that there was an entirely different power supply. That is a stupid idea, since I thought the original adapter served its purpose quite well. I haven't seen the DS Lite in person, so I guess I can't judge, but from the pictures I think it looks pretty sexy. I personally think the longer stylus is lots better, as the original one was definitely too short to use and too thin as well.

I must agree with you timmeh87, the GBA cart sticking out was really dumb, and the new power adapter was pointless too. But hey Nintendo had a bulky item compared to the PSP and they made it smaller (not better), smaller.

Just my 2 cents.

as far as defective products goes, unavoidable and something you should really get over. Genesis 3's were being returned right and left for faulty controllers and controller ports. PS2's stopped reading games discs, and Xbox 360's over heat. Not to mention that NES pin connectors are just fantastic.

i for one love the ds lite and will get one as soon as i get a job and some moolah. i dont worry bout the gba cart becasue i have no gba games so its a non issue there, and i agree with reploid ayla, nintendo having a few dead pixels is a non issue, they take them back no questions asked as opposed to sony where with the psp you have to have a certian number of pixels (in some cases a hefty percentage of the screen) to return it for a replacement

on another note i was at gamestop looking at all the games i cant have and i say their used system case, there were about 4-5 DSs in the case along with 12! twelve used psps, i can see which is more popular lol

I got one today (black) and I like it a lot. The only problem is that you can see finger prints on it very good, which is... very bad. But I don't agree on the power supply. They made a different connector because the output current is higher and would therefore damage (or at least on a long period of time) the battery. It's just for safety and they probably even had to do it. The DS lite is not a lot smaller but it is a lot thinner and lighter. The controls are not as good as the DS imo and that's why I decided to keep both my DS and my DS lite. Oh and the screens are a thousand times better! You'll feel like playing a new game when you play Mario Kart or Animal Crossing! It works well with GBA games too, the illumination that is, the cart sticking out is a pain but I don't use my DS lite for gba games anyway.

sorry to burst your bubble but that doesnt mean much. It could very easily mean that people in your city/town have bought more PSP's meaning more sold back, or that people dont like to buy PSP used because the screens may be scratched

Another power supply. Great. Reminds me of Douglas Adams idea from The Salmon Of Doubt to make a universal "dongle". He was tired of a different dongle for every electronic thing he had. I completely agree. It's not improbable either, a universal power supply coudl be made, but that would make sense and nobody wants that.

Or perhaps they were all upgraded PSP's and nobody had a use for their movie player-I mean-game system, that couldn't play homebrew anymore.

I don't know, the DS Lite is the most beautiful console/handheld I've seen.

Are the screens truly better quality or just brighter?

Both. I've noticed it responds to touch better.

I think it's kind of ugly myself. (I never found the original DS too nice looking either...)

Now if someone hacked one into a Game and Watch case...

I've been TRYING to buy one, but nobody will let me touch, or even look at one in the store. From what I gather (from the skins) the dslite is still too fat to replace my micro. I'd like a chance to touch the buttons too--but that will never happen. The problem with selling something based entirely on size is that you have to show people what the heck size it is.

I don't really care about the cart slot--the ezf team is putting together a mini-sd unit that fits all the way inside anyway, but like many things nintendo does, it is still fairly annoying.

I wonder what the next truly pockatable handheld will be. ever since I got my micro, I've been refusing to go larger. ...except for the two weeks gp2x entertained me--also pretty fat. xgp mini or kids might fit in my pocket, though. and if jungletac would make a handheld that could play something besides their lame titles, I'd be all over that too.

I don't want anything that leaves a visible bulge in my pants, uniform or otherwise--nor would I want one with a perfectly capable GBM already. The gp2x has about 3 times the bulk with it's protruding stick and battery hump and simply doesn't do enough that my current system doesn't do to justify its size. It's been sitting on my dresser since the 1.4.0 firmware. as for DS Lite--there's still a chance it's thin enough (but I doubt it) and I'd really like to make sure its buttons don't feel anything like the original DS. but there's no real way I can tell size, because nintendo has decided not to even put out mockups (like with GBM) and the people who run video game shops have no understanding about the importance of feel in handheld gaming.

Eventually I'll have to switch over to a DS system (since there are no proper gameboys on the horizon) but I'll probably have to wait until the third revision.
