atari paddle controllers

hi i have some atari paddles that were not working as well as i'd like them to, so i did research. i foundout that theres goop in them which if cleaned would improve their performance. i did this and there either worse or just not much better, one has a slight lag, it does not respond as soon as u turn the wheel it takes a centimeter or two to kick in, my friend had the same problem, if neone has a solution, please tell me, or if u know wut kind of pot to replace it with that'd help a lot, thanks

Cleaning the "goop" out probably made it worse. I'm thinking that was grease to keep the pots moving smoothly.

It doesn't matter though. They sound pretty shot to me. Here's what you do... Take one of the paddles apart, and take the base the pot was seated in along with the knob attached to the pot to RadioShack. What you're looking for is a 500K linear taper (not audio taper) variable resistor; aka potentiometer or simply pot. Try to find one that will fit into the base that the old pot was in and make sure the knob fits on as well. If you can't, you may either have to go elsewhere for your pot, (like Digikey) or make some modifications to your paddle.
