Ipod clickwheel
Hey, I have a friend who is paying me some cash if I can fix his 4g clickwheel. So far, it is just unresponcive (the finger movement around it) and the buttons work. Any ideas?
those work much like laptop mouse pad things (IIRC), in response to the capacitance of your finger. its solid-state, no moving parts. if its fried (and not just disconnected) i dont see any way to fix it other than replacing it. you could just replace it and charge him for parts & labour.

Have you taken it apart yet? When I replaced the battery in mine awhile ago, it was just a simple ribbon cable, you could try reseating it. Or have you even tried reseting it since the buttons still work? Or restoring it with the update software? Any of these might work... maybe in the opposite order now that I think about it...
So first, since it's 4 gen, center button and left (or rewind) for 5 seconds should reset it, if not toggle hold switch, try again.
Otherwise, on to the restoring, and last resort is to take it apart (it's kinda hard)
