how about a molex connector? You could always label it as well, so you don't do that screwup you mentioned

Check your local GameStop or EB for that cable. I got one in the used GameBoy accessories pile for a buck a little while back.

Mini-DIN, DIN and microphone cables come to mind for not-so-standard but easy-to-find connectors.

Maybe use a keyboard/mouse connector from an old keyboard/mouse and rip one out of an old PC for the console side. Total cost: FREE.
Alternative total cost: I'll ship you that junk for $1.50.

Use wood and carve out a connector and then drill holes for the pins
Use some heavy duty wire for the pins (you know, that industrial stuff that is just barely bendable)
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...
