...that uses Adobe Illustrator files? I want to use Ben's engraving plate design, but some of the support files for Ben Heck's book are EXCLUSIVELY in Adobe Illustrator, which ain't cool at all...

Download the trial version then. Unless you want something more permanent of course.

inkscape is supposedly like adobe illustrator but i've never used either so you'll have to check it out

I'm not sure, but I think maybe the draw component of OpenOffice can import Illustrator files.
