Is this Possible?

Ok, i have a sterio from the 1980s, its got a turntable, tape player, and and 8-track player. Anyway, the Volume is a slide switch, the other buttons are push switch. Is there anyway to modify this so i can use a remote?

if you have to ask about it, then probably not.

although its <i>theoretically</i> possible it would require some serious electronic skill.

I guess you could make a device that physically presses the button when activated by a remote control, or else hook up a bunch of relays to the thing.

Combine this with a PIC or other microcontroller with serial capabilites and you can use a remote to control the push buttons. I'm not quite sure 'bout that volume slider switch though, but maybe you could use a digital pot?

Yes, you could use just a PIC microcontroller and a handful of transistors. For the volume control, you can get a rotary pot that is moved by a servo (some stereos have these.)

The hardest part would be coming up with a protocol for infrared communication (what flash sequences mean what etc) and doing so would require MPASM assembly code. It's not that involved but you would need to experiment on something else first.

Well "remote" doesn't nesicarily mean "wireless", you're just controlling something remotely, or in simpler terms "away from stuff".
