Black and White Psone screen

I did the LED mod on my screen and wanted to the brightness mod. In this mod, you have to bypass a small surface mount component which is CV23. As shown in the picture.

I ended up doing this mod, but solder accidently went onto the component next to it which I believe was CV30. Without much thinking, I took my desoldering iron to remove the solder from it and it broke off the psone screen board. Luckily, I found it and tested the screen without it and now its black and white when I play SNES games

I tried wiring it back up with ribbon cable as shown:

I soldered both ends of the component to both the solder joints it came from, and I still got the same result...a black and white screen. Is there anything I could do to get it working again? or should I just use a different PSone screen board. I have another one, but the volume button that lowers sound doesnt work.

I realized I posted this in another thread...but its not really relating to screens..sorry if I should have just kept it in that forum section.

So is there anything I can do to fix it? I'd hate to see a PSone screen go to waste.

you could buy a small s/m cap and try putting it in there... they are like 4 cents at digikey (minimum order of 10)

thanks man...I typed that in digikey and I don't think I found the right item. Could you post a link to specifically what it is? Thanks a lot I'd appreciate it. I mine as well try it out. For the time being, I'll work on a case since I have everything running properly (with the exception of color)

start there. apply these filters:

Package / Case: 0805 (its either this one, or one size bigger/smaller. i cant really tell. this is a good size)
Packaging: Cut tape (this is the only one where you dont have to buy at least 1000)
Voltage Rated: 16v (you can try other voltages like 10 or 25. dosent really matter)

ok so from there, you need to select the capacitance you want. now. thats the tricky part, because theres basically absolutely no way to tell what the value is. check if the top side of the cv30 (in the first picture) is connected to a pin of that silver thing up above. .hmm.

ok sorry about the whiteness. i wasnt paying attention. anwyays. if the pad of that capacitor that is highlighted in red is connected to one of the pins on the silver thing highlighted in blue (possibly through the wire that is circled?), then you want something around 27pF

otherwise, id just guess and put in something like 10nF (.01uF) or 100nF (.1uF)

this is sort of a long shot...

Ach, I have no clue. I think it's the color line or something. If you have a multimeter, using capacitance rating setting on the multimeter, check the capacitance of that piece that broke off, and buy a capacitor the same value of the broken piece.

Either that or take your chances and jump the two pads that the component was soldered to.

i dunno about you, but my multimer dosent do capacitance. i thought it was only on higher-end meters. because you need to integrate to do it...

anwyays. he said he attached it and it still dosent work, so i made the assumption that the part was broken. if it still has the right capacitance, he should just try to stick it back in, but without the wires.

yeah, minkster, try putting that cap back onto the board where it came from, without wires.

To first answer your question...yes the trace goes up to the silver thing. I'll try soldering it back on without the wires...which I originally tried to, but couldn't seem to do it. I'll try again though.

yeah, the silver thing is a crystal oscillator. its probably the one that helps process the chroma signal or something. those things are real sensitive to things like long wires and stuff. if you put the cap right back where it came from you might be in business. otherwise, i think we should be able to replace it with one from digikey.

UNLESS by grounding the pin of the oscillator/the pin of the chip that the osc. is connected to, you fried either the osc. or the chip. im not sure whether that would happen or not.

Wow, I am surprised the soldering gods didn't kill me. I soldered the thing slightly cockeyed onto the board. And it worked! Now I have a colored screen. I still never did the brightness mod...is it really worth it? If I did, could I just apply solder over the whole capacitor to bypass it? Well thanks timmeh and skyone for helping me fix it. Man, I'm having so much more luck with this portable than my previous one

Lucky you! And also, it would seem that you can slob the smd part with solder to jump it, can someone else verify this?

yeah. personally, id find a piece of solid core wire, tin the end, then solder it to both sides of the part before cutting it off.

i just put a dab of solder on it, i highly recomend it because it's easy, requires no wire, and can't get caught on aything or take up any space.

Hey, this actually helped me! I WANT a B&W screen so I can LED mod with green LEDs and make the screen look like a green monochrome screen. Am I just crazy?

It's so crazy that it might just work! You should throw some green fruit loops at it and declare it the winner as well.
