DC-DC Inductor

I went to a local store to buy the parts for the dc-dc converter. I got the zener diode, and the capasitor. When i asked him about the inductor he told me i had to have a certain value for it, like a resistor. Now Skyone's diagram just said any small inductor.

1. do i need to get an inductor with a certain value, or just a small one?

2.Can i run the n64's 3.3 off the dc-dc converter alone?(I know there will be lines on the screen but just for the weekend.)

If its just for the weekend, use an adjustable regulator, it works for mine. I think I'll go test battery life now...

A zener diode? Are you sure that's what you got? because i think you just want a regular diode. What are you using a zener diode for?

skyone had a zenier diode in his diagram... i dont know why.

You can use a zener if it's the right value. I'm sorry I wasn't thinking at the time. A regular rectifier diode would be ideal in this situation. I'll fix it up.

Rectifier's are very easy to find actually, most common.

Through research I've found that zeners work better than rectifiers, because they only accept a certain voltage range, which most zeners have. If you are lucky, Spearman, you have a zener that will work.

Yeah i got a 3.3v 1W zener diode. Would it harm if i use the dc-dc converter alone for 3.3v just for like an hour?

EDIT EDIT: NO! It would not work. You need a 9v zener to have it effect.

A 3.3V zener diode wouldn't work. 3.3V is the value at which the diode would allow current to flow either way. Since your battery pack/voltage source has to be 7.2V+, a 3.3V zener diode would do nothing. Make sure your zener diode is a couple volts higher than your voltage source.

Aw......that was a half hour car ride..... so instead of a 9v zener what ohm for a regulator would work?
Yeah im a few minutes away from a temporary hook up of the screen, power, and n64.

What ohm for a regulator? You mean inductor? 8 Ohm - 100 Ohm.

Ok. This is the last question on this thread. What ohm rectifieing diode do i need?
