my screen doesn't work. fix or get different screen?

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

my screen doesn't work. fix or get different screen?

Post by daguuy »

i have a ps2 verge screen and it's exactly the same as a psone screen. here's some history about it:

-when i got it, it ran fine from battery but the colors inverted from wall power (that's a bad sign...)

-i did the LED mod and that went well and it worked great. i played games on it for a while before actually portablizing it

-i finally got around to portablizing it. i hot-glued it into my N64 case and did all the power wiring and everything but when i turned it on it was just a dull white, no video or volume/brightness bars or anything

that's when i was like "uh oh." i carefully took it out of the N64 case and took all the hot glue off so i could try to fix it. first, i checked all the wires and everything is wired correctly and the battery was charged and everything. then i unplugged the LCD's ribbon cable from the PCB and turned it on to see if that made a difference. it just made the same dull white, that means that the LCD wasn't gettting any signal at all from the PCB. then i took off the LCD and LEDs completely so i just had the PCB. there's a little surface-mount yellow LED that's supposed to light up when the screen is on but it didn't light up at all. that's bad, i thought my screen was dead. then i jumped the fuse to see if that did anything but it didn't. it also has the 5v fix so i'm out of options. is there anything i can do to get my screen working again? what do think could be the problem?

if i can't fix it, i'll have to get a new screen. people are having distortion problems when powering N64s from TI dc-dc convertors and using psone screens so i may get a different brand of screen because the distortion was linked to psone screens and i think i remember somebody saying it works fine with other screens. has anybody had any experience with any non-official 5" screens? what would you suggest i get?

earlier in february when i jumped the fuse to fix it, it didn't work. i left it for about a month and then just tried it again and it works :D so if my N64 is still alive (it was when i last checked) i can finish my N64p soon! woohoo!
EDIT: i tested it with the N64 and it works, but the controller doesn't

oh well, a controller's easier to replace than a screen :|
