Palm Pilots and PocketPCs and Newtons!

This morning my friend gave me an old Kyocera 7135 Smartphone, and it worked all day at school. Then I put it on my desk at home and went to my night course. I get back, plug it in, try to use it, and on the third setup step (aligning the stylus) it gives me the error "Fatal Error: Fatal Exception".

Here's what exactly happened to it all day:

- I got it and used it for a while
- It has no battery, so I unplug it (after holding down the power button)
- Repeat 4 o 5 times
- Gym class (it sits in my locker)
- I take it and use it for a while in the last class of the day
- I put it in my pocket, where it satys for about a half hour on the way home
- I put it on my bed
- It stays there from 2:50 to 5:45-ish
- I plug in the power adapter, plug it into the phone and turn it on.
- It gives me a flashing "Fatal Exception" error on Step 3 of the setup

I have no clue why it's doing this now! Any ideas?

First off, lucky fool, I need a new phone and PDA, both of mine are horrid .


Anyway, let the battery die out completely (or unplug batteries or whatever), leave it for an hour or two, and it should reset and work.

Hard reset. Probably an application, or some sorta bug.
Instructions taken from here (PDF LINK!)
1. With the flip open, turn the Kyocera 7135 smartphone over. Open the battery door on the back of the phone.
2. Press and hold down on the backlight button on the keypad of the phone. Keep holding down the backlight button as you use the stylus to press the reset pin on the right side of the battery. Wait a moment and release only the reset pin.
3. When the Palm logo appears, release the backlight key. The following message appears:

Code: Select all

Erase all data?
Yes - "up" button
NO - any other button

4. Press the "ok" key below the screen to complete the hard reset and delete your data. Press any other key to cancel the hard reset and keep your data.

@ Jeff: It's sitting there now. I just got the phone and power brick. No battery, no stylus. I was using the plastic toothpick from a swiss army knife (I keep the plastic toothpick with me sometimes, it's pretty useful. Of course the rest of the knife stays home )

@ vb_master: I tried that a few times, and it didn't work.

At the end of English class (right after gym) I had plugged it in and it was sitting nest to me on the desk. At the end of class I grab it and close it (was going to unplug it then like I was before) and it started vibrating (according to my friend it was doing this because it found a signal. He said that's what happened with it.) My hands were still a little sweaty when I picked it up, and wne I opened it this evening there was a few small drips around a couple buttons, but I don't think that would cause any harm... Also I wiped the screen a bit with the cleaning cloth for my glasses before I turned it on, but that shouldn't have caused any problems either.

I don't really need a cell phone (my seven year old Nokia still works like new!), so maybe I should look into getting a real Palm Pilot dedicated PDA, not a SmartPhone. (Besides I've read mixed reviews about the 1735. Some said it craps out badly after x months and they had to replace it.) Especially since this one doesn't have a battery or a HotSync cable or a Stylus, and it was used rather rough by field workers (construction I think...)

I had it unplugged for an hour and it still gave me the same error at the same point. I'll let it sit overnight unplugged.

Since I'm missing so much stuff for it, I think I'll just buy a decent new Palm Pilot. (or try to get a replacement, but I don't have any of the paperwork for it) It's missing a battery, the HotSync cable, a stylus, and any sort of case/holster. And at $60 for a battery (No I'm NOT buying from some random "pdabatterys4u.com" site) and who-knows-how-much for the other stuff, it's more economical (and I think a better decision) to buy new.

I'm leaning more towards the Palm system rather than PocketPC. I dont know why. It could be because of the old MacAddict CD I have that's full of Palm software. Maybe it's the price difference (good ol' cheapskate bic! ). I'm debating between getting the $99 <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/z22/">z22</a> or the $199 <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/tx/">Tungsten E2</a>. I'd like to get the e2, mainly because of its multimedia features (but then again that's what a laptop is for...) and it seems to have better hardware. Then again the z22 is signifigantly cheaper, but it looks dumbed-down and nooby (for lack of a better word. You know, nooby- designed so any noob can understand. See also Office Assistant and WIndows XP Home Edition) But you get what you pay for... GAAH! too many decisions!

EDIT: I think the z22 would be kind of a waste of money; I'll shoot for the e2. I like its multimedia features; even better than the 1735!

Graduation's only a month away! I think I can get a few rechargeable AAAs for my Newton Messagepad in the meantime. (It's lasted 13 years so far! Yes it's the original MessagePad! Copyright 1993! )

I just got a O2 XDA and it's quite a nice phone altho its $1200 here

Brought it for myself and my lil business i've been doing lately which keeps me busy and away from here i just keep forgetting.

But have a look at the O2 xda's there quite a nice system it has wifi camera bluetooth etc.

I use it for my work on the side and also use it to watch some movies and listen to music plus use it as a rss viewer and web browser when im neer a wifi point plus using tasks etc has helped me keep track of crap i gotta do.
