OMG WE'RE OLD!

Lemmie Tell you a story.

I was on the bus this afternoon, a kid had a GBA (the driver lifed the rule temporarily, just in time for me to loose my IPODs Head Phones >_<), he asked me for help on Final Fantasy IV on GBA, i helped him and he asked me how i knew how to do it. I replied with a i beat it around 10 years ago on the SNES remark. He looked at me Dumbfounded and had the nerve to ask me what a SNES was O_O.

Has something like that happened to you, and did it make you feel old?

Your school is weird.

Once I wore an Atari tshirt to school, and only one kid recoginized it. It is sad that he didn't remember the SNES. Sad.

One time I said to a guy that I had an old PC that ran MS-DOS and he asked "Oh, is that the new website to download games?"

But that computer is fried now

everybody in my skool thinks they're cool if they have Xbox 360's or Sony crap. And then theres others who think Pac-Man is the only game ever created. I wear a lot of Atari shirts and stuff. Maybe this person was confused and thought it was called a Super Nintendo. That's too bad. I prefer to play NES/SNES/N64 and Handheld (whether GB or PSP) games, and homebrews! But i do like Xbox a lot! BTW, i'm only 14...how old was this stupid kid!?

It certainly seems that way.

One of my goals is to complete a polished SNESp and bring it to my scout meeting to show off to and explain to the other scouts how I did it. (Yes, I'm in the Boy Scouts--16 y/o here. It's actually a good organization to get into and it helps your college transcript tremendously-- if you make Eagle.) My reasons for showing the (future) SNESp to them are:

1) Sharing a common interest in video games
What teenage male don't like 'em? It doesn't matter which system you game on, just that there is a brotherhood for it as a whole.

2) Sharing technical knowledge
The reason we have the inventions/devices/whatnot we have today is due to people out there willing to tinker around. If I can jar these kids inventive senses from the cool factor of the SNESp, then maybe they'll make something just as amazing in their lives, or even better.

3) Help them find a niche
I love electronics. I don't know much about circuits and amps and all the whizwhoo behind it all, but I'LL LEARN in a heartbeat. Relating to the last point, if I can help these guys find what they want to do in life, then that's even better. Love planes? Gain experience building and flying them. That sort of thing.

4) Expose them to something they've had little exposure to
All right, so I'm the oldest scout in the troop. I'll be 17 in two months, and we have three other HS guys, and a smattering of 7/8 graders and two sixth graders I think. Anyhow, I'm fairly sure most of these guys weren't in to the SNES scene as deep as I was. It was my first console--setting my standards for what a console should be in the years to come. These guys may think the 32/64/"128"/"256" bit generations are like sliced bread, but they don't know what the 16-bit SNES was capable of.

Sure, you have your GBA ("portaSNES"), but where's StarFox? Where's Uniracers? Zombies Ate My Neighbors? Parodius? Unmodified DKC series? I'll have my less-portable-than-a-GBA SNESp over your current handheld anyday. So much fun from that grey box... kinda sad these guys don't know it like I did.

My friends at school joke to me why I wanted a portable SNES when there's something called a GBA out there. The preceding paragraph only serves to counter that attitude. They actually appreciate the SNES and GEN, but they're not too keen on the portable size. Enthusiasts like us at the Ben Heck forums immediately understand why that's the case and consider it a non-issue.

Oh, and if this SNESp goes well, then I'll craft a PSp and show it off to the guys at school. I'd rather have that over a PSP now!

Yes, in comparison to these guys, I feel OOOLD. But it sure has its priveliges, like growing up exposed to better games (hisssss boooo). They can all take me on, but I'll just win by showing off the pure 90s bliss these grey carts held..

Well, you are talking about a kid who's about as old as the N64 probably...

One time I was talking to one of my friends about how I cleaned my Nintendo (NES) to get the cartridges to work again, and some kid said "Gamecube doesn't use cartridges! DUH!".

Silly 8-year-olds.

Remember guys, the N64 came out roughly 10 years ago (a decade even in September I think), and these kids haven't seen any games that aren't 2D, aside from GBA and maybe GBC. Jeez and I remember well when all this was new! (Not so much the Genesis, since I was 2 at the time and all we had was an Atari 2600...) In elementary school, one of my friends had a 3DO, another had a Genesis. I only got my first SNES gameplay when I tried the demo unit in FuncoLand. (Yes, FUNCOLAND! Good times...)

It's sad, really. Not many kids today know about the old classics, but they go out and buy GBA ports of Super Mario Bros. 3, the Sonic Collection, the Pac-Man collection, and let's not forget Namco Museum! ("Classic Game Collections" are a big waste of time in my opinion.

I completely understand the younger guys were only 1, 2, or 3 when the 32/64 bit consoles came out. I'm not ignoring birthdays here.. but just that they missed out IMO.

im 13 i grew up on snes i worshiped it ......this is because my parents didnt like us to game we had no consoels. oh but once i got my hands on a super nes they wished they would have eased me into games because them depriving me turned me into a gameaholic

wow, I'm exactly 2 monthes younger than harshboy

. I grew up 1/4 on sega genisis, 1/6 on gamecube 3 yrs ago and the rest is other. But either way it's not like I was stupid and was like "... an NES is NOT a gaming system" Boy some people are pretty stupid (like me at many times

)
edit: i just realized that both younger people and fairly young teenagers who didn't have old systems,like myself, will have an experience of old gaming on the Nintendo Revolution

I've never been this surrounded by people younger than me. It doesn't really matter--we're all playing the same portable game here.

WELL, it does make me feel mighty and authoritative. After years of being one of the younger guys in the forum, I'm now "up there." But I've still a long way to go.

NES was my first system. i suppose i was not too interested in videogames at the time, i dont really remember playing it much. i completely ignored the SNES except when i went to my older cousins house. then we would play ninja turtles, mario paint, or mario kart for hours.

then in 1997 i got a nintendo 64 for christmas or something. the rest is history. (then this christmas i broke that nintendo 64)

the only sega console ive actually played is dreamcast. toy commander is still an awesome game.
