Ok well I've FINALLY found some spare time and am working on this downstairs right now. I lost some stuff for the controller.... so I went to goodwill and got a new NES with two controllers for 8 bucks.
Anyways, I've cut the controller (just to the right of the D pad because that spot looked like it would require the least amount of sodering. Now I have discovered a SERIOUS problem. Those traces are like half a millimeter apart! How the heck am I suppose to solder wires to them without connecting??
For those of you that don't remember the old thread, basically I'm seperating the controller into two (one piece has D-pad and the other has start/seclect A/B) and then connecting the traces together with some IDE wires.
You CAN solder those without touching. I did the same process for my portable. Also where you cut the boards IS the best place to seperate them. Just use small wires(preferably old printer cable) and a small soldering iron.

BTW 8 bucks is a great deal for what you got.
I think I'm gonna solder them further down the traces like they said above... this really is my first time using a soldering iron (I have improved greatly so far during this project though )
Ok in the book Ben uses a heatsink on the regulator for the screen... am I gonna need one too because I don't see one on the "custom" design chapter but there is one in the hand built NES by Ben chapter?
