Sony PSOne LCD repair question..

Hi folks,

nice web site! I'm actually here to find out how to repair my LCD screen, rather than rip it apart (somebody told me I should post the question here and see if anyone can help me).

Basically, the LCD screen is dead. I took it apart, and started poking around (including putting a light behind the screen) and it works!

So the problem is that the bulb (original sony) isn't getting electricity. I checked with a voltmeter all around the coil on the top, and it's all 0v.

The voltage across C114 (black chip next to coil with 100 16V written on it) has 7.5v across it. The speakers work, and the LCD works. The coil isn't getting power and hence bulb doesn't light.

Anyway to repair this w/o resorting to the LED mod??

new lcd not board part thers one on ebay like $5

The problem is not with the LCD (I don't register any voltage coming out of the coil that's supposed to bring the 7.5V to over 35V) but rather with something before the coil. Just wondering if anyone has done such a repair before.

you need a new one. an led mod wont help

Anyways, I suppose you could try and patch the inverters voltage input straight into one of the 7805 inputs, but I think it'd be much better to do the led mod.

Why do you think he needs a new one? He said that if he puts a light behind it it works. So if he could just draw power from another point on the board to power a couple of LEDs to light it up the screen it would work just fine. Like Gannon said. If you see something wrong with this idea please share as it may help him fixing it, or if needed even replacing it.

why would I need to replace the screen?

The LCD works fine. I can see the game play when I shine a light behind the screen. It's the tube that doesn't power on. Using a volt meter, I can see the power going out of the coil is 0V (not 30V) so it's dead.

At the same time the 4 legs going to the coil, they're all grounded (i.e. a short between each and ground). Anybody know the power that should be between each leg? (the coil has 4 legs in 2 legs out).

well, if the inverter is broken he can find a new one, and if the input is just not working right he could patch in voltage from somewhere else. I'm not sure of the inputs for the inverter though.

Any schematics/part name/part number on that inverter?

I can always trace back to see what component is broken, but I need to know what voltage is expected on each pin before the inverter, and I don't have another LCD to find that out.

Anyone care to help?
