personally, I do run linux, but it is stupid that everyone says that linux is the ultimate solution. Linux is only really worth your time if you know what you are doing.

I didn't suggest Ubuntu for the older machines, I suggested Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux. If he's looking to optimize performance for an older machine, I would suggest those and other small distributions over ubuntu.

THANK you!

It really annoys me when someone says "I'm having problem XYZ" and everyone slings Linux at them as the ultimate solution.
you really seam to have a problem with linux down to your very core. I do not understand your crusade against linux, did it steal your woman or something? It isn't the end of the world for someone who is not you to use it. I will not suggest it to you so I do not understand why you have to make a big deal about it whenever its mentioned.

I just gave him an option. I specifically mentioned that it would be good if he wanted the machine as only a web-surfing machine because that doesn't take any getting used to, really. I also didn't tell him he should do it nor did I tell him it was the ultimate solution, I just said that it is a solution. the best solution is in the eye of the beholder and that is up to him to decide.

Oh, I wouldn't recommend Ubuntu for a slow machine, either. But I dual boot xubuntu (optimized for slow systems) on my P-II and it runs better than Windows 98SE lite.
