portable making...so much work?

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

AA batteries provide 1.5 volts of electricity each, 1.2 if it's rechargeable. A PS2 should get at least 110 volts to run if you do it directly from the power cord (it has a converter inside that knocks everything down to 3.3/5/12 volts, in most cases, like most electronics, though sometimes that converter is outside the device and part of the plug). To get 110 volts you would need 74 normal batteries (110/1.5 rounded up) or 92 rechargeables (110/1.2, rounded up) wired in series (+ end on one connected to - on the other). Then you have to make it AC instead of DC (not as easy as going the other way around) and your battery life probably won't get you much further past the startup screen. That can be increased by using different batteries (C or D cells) or increasing the number of battery sets and wiring each set in parallel (+ on all sets are together, - on all sets are together).

A slightly more viable option for a luggable (but not portable) PS2 is to wire a car battery to a power inverter (something that lets you power small electronics from the 12 volt cigarette lighter in a car) but I'm really not sure what kind of battery life you can reasonably expect from that. You can also get a little more playtime with an LCD (flat) tv instead of a CRT (tube) one.

Also, I'm going to throw this into technical questions and answers...

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

If you use Firefox generally it will help by underlining words when their no spelled right, has a built in spell-check. If you at least make the effort you use decent English you should be fine.

As for your portable, grab some wire when you pick up your soldering iron. I would suggest a multi-strand wire (like rope). This stuff is easier to work with, it bends and wont brake like a single strand wire will.

Also I don't know if you've looked at any of the guides on the forums, but if you haven't I would suggest you do. Making a portable out of nearly any system is the same thing. There are minor difference and if you need clairification you can ask, but the basics are all the same.

Good luck.

What you need to do is use some type of desoldering tool. Desoldering irons are the best at this. You use it to remove the solder from the port, then you can cut a hole somewhere else in the case or basically put it anywhere you want. Just use wires to solder it back to where it was before.

Perhaps you should start with a simpler project with more documentation. You would learn a lot of important things that you can apply to later, harder projects and you would still have a lot of fun. Just a thought, not trying to discourage you or anything.

nothing is hard if you dont put a lot of effort into it :3 i just wanna be able to play my games while outside, or walking, or just on my couch, ill just leave the mem cards where there at, i still have enough room for my hand, so all i need is the stuff, and a picture pointing to where i need to solder :P
