some sites offer T-shirts for contributions after a certain amount, like $15 or $20. that would be nice, i'd definetly do it than. And i'd donate, probably in the summer when I'd have more money.

Not trying to be mean, its just there are better ways to spend your money.

The definitions of geek and nerd are way too variable. I count as either or both depending on the definition...

I tend to term a geek as someone who likes to get under the covers of gadgets, a tinkerer (modder), experimenter with an unhealthy knowledge of such things; a nerd is more of your wannabe intellectual who thinks he is better than everyone else because "he must be" - you know, like the class swot with heavy dandruff and acne and nose in the air??

1) The suggestion was when I thought the web server was expensive, not just a few bucks a month.

2) We haven't heard from Ben yet as to whether any contributions from us would in fact make any difference to speed and reliability by moving to better servers. If there isn't a case then there is no point and things may as well stay "as is". If we can help Ben, I am sure he will respond to this thread and let us know...

I agree with the naysayers, donated money to this site isn't a good idea. Because you can't make a "business model" using that, people are flaky, and they money won't always be there, if at all.

I actually bought a dedicated server from iPower back in July, but their tech support and misinformation was so bad I never got it running (the more you spend the less service they give you, for some reason) and thus canceled it after a month of frustration.

Part, or most, of the problem is I don't have, nor want to spend the time to find a new good host. Just because you don't see new portables every week doesn't mean I'm not busy. This current site is paid up til April.

If persons here want to help, perhaps scour the internet, find the best server (NOT the cheapest, best, but sub-$100/month would be nice) and send me recommendations. Right now we do about 300 gig/month transfer which is the big thing, storage we don't need that much. Of course we need PHP, mySQL, all that jazz...

RE t-shirts, it's a good idea, something Jones and his wife have suggested on many occasions. Again comes back to a time thing, but if people had suggestions (Cafepress, etc) I'd look into them and perhaps design some crap.

Seriously just have it say Benheck and with an atari-like joystick next to it and have the shirt be some nerdy color like dark blue or brown.

Cafepress sounds like a good idea, since they'll put your designs on just about anything. (Shirts, hats, mugs, mousepads...) It seems simple enough; they have a base price for each item and you mark it up for your profit.

As for the designs themselves, you could have a contest and pick the 5 or so designs you like best. Each of the winners could get a free t-shirt or mug with their design on it. You know, something gimmicky like that to get started.

I remember a while back someone made a design with a stick figure carrying an Atari over the words "Cut the cords". Stuff like that is great since it can be printed equally well in black and white (for different shirt colors).

How about "Little Tykes 'My First Electronics Workbench'" with a plastic talking soldering iron that makes the sound of bacon sizzling when you grab the wrong end.
