The button batteries are there to store the electricity generated by the shaking. Otherwise you'd have to shake it while trying to use it!
The things do work, but not as easily as they seem to on TV. They have that blondy jently rocking it back and forth two or three times, while in reality you really have to SHAKE that thing.

Gosh the flash lite works by having a magnet (which exerts a magnetic field)

Yes, but the shaking idea could in theory, probably not in practicality be used to charge batteries as well. Plug in your shaking charger (I would not have it built in, as the magnet can't be good for the lcd) and shake. The magnet coil thingy produces electricity, which runs down the wire, through the plug, and into the batteries. To settle this whole silly debate I JUST took mine ["Mine" defined as the shake-to-recharge flashlight I own, and "just" meaning a few moments before I posted this] apart and there are indeed two CR2032 button cell lithium batteries in it! I even took the liberty of testing them with a multimeter just in case any one wants to question my ability to read the writing on batteries, and they do indeed read 3 Volts apiece. SO. THERE. Once again mine is the just knock of brand complete with Engrish manual, the one on T.V. may be different.
DISCLAIMER: Please take this post with a grain of salt. It's not that I am particularly mad at any one of you, It just gets me mad when people start going on about calculus when about 3 minutes of unscrewing the thing to look at the innards would provide the answer. Which was my point in my original post in this thread, that the coil/magnet might just be for show and it doesn't recharge them at all. Or maybe they are rechargeable batteries, which might be true since there was some Chinese text on them, which might have said something like "rechargeable" or maybe something about "all you're base" I might be paraphrasing
