Carbon Monoxide
My mums fat fryer went mad and started conking out loads of smokey fumes! ans the house was full of smoke and we were all coughing and spluttering. wouldn't the carbon monoxide of bonded with my haemoglobin leaving less room for oxygen to be transferred causeing brain damage due to lack of oxygen? Also my brother crushed my neck. COuld that cut off blood/oxygen to my brain?
It takes time for your body to fully be affected, nothing happens instandly. Also if your brother was possably cutting off circulation to your head it takes about 15 minutes for oxygen to run out or lack of circulation to become damaging, same reason they say not to have a turnicit on for more then 15 minutes. Further I think you should be fine, non of you turned pink right?

Re: Carbon Monoxide
Man, seems like a bad day for your family. Its true that the carbon monoxide will bond with your hemoglobin, but you will not suffer brain damage from the reduced oxygen carrying capacity you would have. You will, however, suffer from hypoxic effects. Smokers have carbon monoxide present in their blood, causing them to be more susceptible to hypoxic effects (like shortness of breath after going down a flight of stairs). Carbon monoxide is pretty deadly since its usually colorless, odorless, and tasteless (at least in cars, and small airplanes). You may suffer headaches, and fatigue, but if any of you should become unconscious (I don't think any of you did) you should seek medical attention. Also, if you suffer symptoms for more than a day or so you would want to seek attention. They may have to put you on oxygen until the carbon poisioning is gone. It sounds like your family wasn't exposed for very long at all so you all should be fine.sam fisher wrote:My mums fat fryer went mad and started conking out loads of smokey fumes! ans the house was full of smoke and we were all coughing and spluttering. wouldn't the carbon monoxide of bonded with my haemoglobin leaving less room for oxygen to be transferred causeing brain damage due to lack of oxygen? Give it 12 hours, maybe 24 if your not sure. I doubt the way the carbon-monoxide bonds to the human body like nitrogen, but it could be only minutes or hours for you to breath it off possable.sam fisher wrote:Yes i know all of that stuff about it but many thanks. I just dont know the average time it takes to get rid of it.

That's why you take a lesson from me. Put up some barbed wire, some electric fencing, and unlease the rabid dogs whenever somebody gets too close to the house, even if its someone you know. I'll be damned if someone is going to block my chimney.

I'm more conserned with freezing to death. At least if we have a carbon-monoxide leak in the house and I end up with a headack or more tired then I am already I know what's going on. Well that and getting frost-bite is very painful, more so if you have to watch them cut your toes/fingers/feet/hands/ect off.
