This whole "Toaster NES" thing is really amusing, but it would be a cool* mod, possibly Hackaday-worthy!

I'm thinking you might be able to rig something up so you'd put the cart in and it would rest in the unit. Then you'd press down the lever and the cart would be pulled into the cart slot. After the cart is seated, the lever would catch on a latch, keeping it depressed against a momentary SPST switch for the power switch. Then the LEDs would light and the game would start.

When you want to stop, you press a mechanical button which depresses a normally-closed SPST momentary switch (which would cut power to the board) en route to the release mechanism for the cartridge. The cart would then pop up and (maybe) a bell could sound. The power would be off and the leds would shut off. (I'd suggest you use a capacitor or something on the LEDs to simulate the warm-up and cool-down glowing effect of the heating elements.)

It may sound complex, but it really could be quite simple. And boy would it be authentic!

Just make sure you don't confuse it with your real toaster, because "Super Pop-Tart Bros." isn't a game. :P

*hot? I dunno anymore

instead of a spst use one of those click on click off power switch things like in an old pc or like the psone power button stuff like that, it would be fun to build i think

You're going to have problems patenting something made with another system, without the system producer's permission.

Oh yeah, and to keep this post from being composed entirely of shameless spam, I'm going to add my input on toploaders. They can be nice, but I don't see why they're as expensive as they are other than the fact that they're somewhat rare. I guess people who started selling them said that since they were rare, they were therefore worth a whole lot more money, setting the standard for the rest. I don't really see the point either, and who doesn't like a good ole' blinking screen once and awhile? That's part of the whole NES experience.
