iTunes

Set the type to MP3 under import (found in preferences) put your songs in the library, highlight all, right click, and click on "convert to MP3" :)

Audacity is a free and opensource program. It will convert WAV to MP3 no problem.

another free one to check out is dbPowerAmp (http://www.dbpoweramp.com)

edit: Just noticed that the newest version only lets you use the mp3 conversion for 30 days... so I'd say if this program works well for you, find an older version that doesn't have this limitation.

well this would be time consuming and only worth it if you have CDRW's but just burn it onto a CD then rip it with Windows Media Player 10. Or go to http://www.pcworld.com/ and do a search their recommendations (however you spell it) are usually pretty good

You might check out CDEX ripper. It's pretty good (encodes with the LAME codec.)
